Back to the lens-arrival day, <span class='nobr'>I was just<\/span>\nsnapping some quick shots by hand, sometimes bracing the camera against the\nwindow. When one hears <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>non-CPU lens<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span>, there's normally at\nleast <span class='nobr'>a mechanical<\/span> coupling so that the lens can communicate its current\naperture to the camera, but with this Venus\/Laowa lens, there's nothing.\nWhen you mount the lens, the camera doesn't even know something's there,\nmuch less what it is and what its aperture ring is dialed to.<\/p>\n\n<p>At least on prosumer Nikon bodies, you can set the <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>Non-CPU lens data<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> in the setup menu:<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/lr\/D4-Setup-Menu.png\" width=\"350\" height=\"226\"\nid=\"iD4_Setup_Menu\"\/><\/div>\n\n<p>Sadly, as with many things, Nikon doesn't make this as simple as it should be...<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic tight'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/lr\/D4-LensData-Menu.png\" width=\"350\" height=\"226\"\nid=\"iD4_LensData_Menu\"\/><\/div>\n\n<p>We'd like to denote that we're using <span class='nobr'>a lens<\/span> with <span class='nobr'>a 60mm<\/span> focal length,\nbut <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>60<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> is not one of the choices available. <span class='nobr'>I run into<\/span> this problem <span class='nobr'>a\nlot.<\/span>.. <span class='nobr'>I need<\/span> <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>420<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> when using <a\nhref='\/blog\/2011-05-11\/1769'>my Nikkor 300mm f\/2<\/a> with\nits dedicated 1.4&times;TC, but Nikon doesn't allow for it here. <span class='nobr'>I need<\/span>\n<span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>125<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> with my aforementioned Voigtl\u00e4nder 125mm f\/2.5, but it doesn't\ninclude that either. Sigh.<\/p>\n\n<p>So, for my new 60mm lens I go with <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>70<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Normally you'd set the <i>maximum<\/i> aperture size (minimum aperture number for your lens &mdash; F2.0 for the 300mm lens mentioned above),\nand the mechanical linkage between the lens and the camera would tell the camera what aperture the lens was actually dialed to\nfor any particular shot, but since our super-macro doesn't have that linkage, instead of the <i>maximum<\/i> aperture,\nset the <i>actual<\/i> aperture you're using. <span class='nobr'>For each shot<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n<p>This means that if you want the aperture properly encoded in each\nimage's metadata, you've got to visit this menu every time you make an\naperture change. That's 11 or 12 button presses per aperture change. Sigh.\n<span class='nobr'>I don't<\/span> envision using this lens except for special macro needs, so it's <span class='nobr'>a\nhassle<\/span> I'll live with.<\/p>\n\n<hr width='33%' align='left'\/>\n\n<p id='lightroom'>Even if you've gone through all the <span\nclass='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>Non-CPU lens data<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span>\nhassle, Lightroom still shows the lens as <span class='nobr'><span\nclass='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>0.0 mm f\/0.0<span\nclass='QC'>&#8221;<\/span><\/span>, which is frustrating to say the least,\nand <span class='nobr'>a metadata<\/span> geek like me can't put up with\nthat, so prior to importing the raw files into Lightroom, <span\nclass='nobr'>I update<\/span> them with proper metadata. Something about the extreme macro combined with the flash made the result <i>hyper<\/i>-sensitive to\ndirt\/dust\/crud on the sensor, causing the results to be <span class='nobr'>a veritable<\/span> star field of failure.<\/p>\n\n<p>In any one individual shot I found literally 10&times; the number of spots that I'd seen in total over the last 10 years.<\/p>\n\n<p>I spent some time to clean up the spots with Lightroom's spot healing tool, but even though\nthe shot above has <i><b>612<\/b><\/i> such corrections(!), clicking through to the full-resolution version\nshows many more that <span class='nobr'>I just<\/span> didn't have the energy to deal with.<\/p>\n\n<p>But for a taste of what I was dealing with, here's <span class='nobr'>a full<\/span>-resolution crop without the spot-removal corrections:<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic tight' itemscope itemtype='http:\/\/schema.org\/Photograph'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JF4_068521oc.jpg\" width=\"698\" height=\"464\"\nalt=\"My Sensor Shame tiny crop (1\/50th the area of the whole sensor) at full resolution Did I let a dog lick the sensor or something? Overall the photos on this post have 2,147 spot corrections, which\nperhaps says as much about my level of anality as it does about my\nsensor.<\/p>\n\n<p>(I didn't count the spots by hand... <a href='\/blog\/lightroom-goodies\/data-explorer'>my Data Explorer plugin<\/a> counted them for me.)<\/p>\n\n<p>Checking for sensor dirt <a\nhref='\/dust-reference-page.html'>the way <span class='nobr'>I normally<\/span>\ndo<\/a>, with <span class='nobr'>a normal<\/span> lens and without <span class='nobr'>a flash,<\/span> showed just <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> of the\nmore egregious spots.
