{"id":2528,"date":"2015-02-22T14:32:05","date_gmt":"2015-02-22T05:32:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2015-02-22\/2528"},"modified":"2015-02-22T14:32:05","modified_gmt":"2015-02-22T05:32:05","slug":"photo-development-challenge-inspire-me-and-others-with-your-artistic-interpretation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2015-02-22\/2528","title":{"rendered":"Photo-Development Challenge: Inspire Me and Others With Your Artistic Interpretation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<p>A week ago I posed <a\nhref='\/blog\/2015-02-13\/2523'>about a fantastic video<\/a> of an\nexperienced photographer giving <span class='nobr'>a quick<\/span> once-over to\nphotographs submitted by strangers. <span class='nobr'>The change<\/span> from unprocessed original to\nprocessed result was often striking and of interest on its own, but the true value of the video was\nthe running dialog of the what\/why\/how of his editing decisions. <span class='nobr'>No right<\/span> or wrong... just\ninspiration and ideas.<\/p>\n\n<p>With that in mind, I think it could be quite interesting to see how\ndifferent people interpret the same photo, so I'd like to offer <span\nclass='nobr'>a few<\/span> unprocessed raw files from my own photo archives,\nwith an invitation to all to process them in Adobe Lightroom, imbibing your\nown personal artistic senses on the photo, and then send the result to me\nto share here with everyone.<\/p>\n\n<p>The result, I hope, will be more ideas and inspiration for all.<\/p>\n\n<p style='margin-top:50px'><span style='font-size:120%'><b>The Raw Files:<\/b><\/span>\n<br\/>If I haven't posted results, <span class='nobr'>I'm still<\/span> accepting submissions for when I do post the results,\nso you can still send them in.<\/p>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\">\n  table#t2526 img.l2526 { width: 150px; font-size:120%'><b>The Rules:<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>There are no <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>rules<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span>... this is not <span class='nobr'>a contest<\/span> or anything like that. <span class='nobr'>It's just some<\/span> fun to see what direction different people take the same\nphoto.<\/p>\n\n<p>But here are the guidelines on how to get your result featured here on my blog:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><p><b>Process the Image<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>Download the raw file and import it into Adobe Lightroom (any version)\nand processes it as you like. Once the pixels and metadata (see below) are\nas you like, save the XMP file <span class='nobr'>(<span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>Metadata &gt; Save\nMetadata to File<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span>)<\/span> and then mail that XMP file <a\nhref='mailto:jfriedl@yahoo.com?subject=photo+processing+challenge'>to\nme<\/a>. You'll find the XMP file will be located next to the raw file,\nwith an <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>xmp<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> extension.<\/p>\n\n<p>Be sure to mail only the XMP file; <span class='nobr'>I don't<\/span> need another copy of the original.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n<li><p><b>Your Name and Other Info<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In the <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>Title<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> and\/or <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>Caption<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> metadata fields,\nenter anything you'd like to be presented on my blog along with your\nresult... such as your name, your web site, and your thoughts on the photo and\nthe approach you took in its processing. (This kind of description is where there can be real value-add for me and others, to see\nthe thought process behind the result.)<\/p>\n<p>If you provide professional post-processing services, by all means\nfeel free to mention that.<\/p>\n\n<p>The <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>Large Caption<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> metadata preset may be useful here.<\/p>\n\n<\/li>\n\n\n<li><p><b>Multiple Versions of the Same Image<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If you have different takes from the same original, make <span class='nobr'>a Develop<\/span> Snapshot of each one, being sure to give the snapshot <span class='nobr'>a descriptive<\/span> name when creating it.<\/p>\n\n<p>There's only one Caption for all snapshots, so if you indeed do include multiple versions, please describe them all in your one Caption.<\/p>\n\n<p>You can also just send multiple XMP files.<\/p>\n\n<p>Note: it might be convenient to use virtual copies while creating your\ndifferent versions, but you still must save each version as its own Develop\nSnapshot prior to saving the XMP file. <span class='nobr'>It's sometimes<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a source<\/span> of confusion\nwith Lightroom because snapshot <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>saved<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> in <span class='nobr'>a virtual<\/span> copy is\n<i>actually<\/i> saved in the master. <span class='nobr'>To add to<\/span> the confusion, metadata like\nTitle and Caption of <span class='nobr'>a virtual<\/span> copy are <i>not<\/i> saved with the master,\nnor in the XMP file, so they must all be entered in the master's metadata fields.\n<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n<li><p><b>Multiple Images<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>You can participate with as many images as you'd like... the more the merrier! Feel free to zip up the XMP files to make mailing easier.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n<li><p><b>Other Ways To Share<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>You can also feel free to process the image however you like, with\nwhatever tools you like, and post the results on your own blog. Just please\ndrop me a note <a\nhref='mailto:jfriedl@yahoo.com?subject=photo+processing+challenge'>via\nemail<\/a> or via comment on this blog post, so that your efforts can be\nshared with other readers here.<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>When it comes time to publish, I'll load your XMP into Lightroom and\ngenerate JPEG versions to be published on my blog, along with your Title\nand Caption info.
