Having had my first “<\/span>real”<\/span> bike ride two weeks ago, a 55km ride up into the\nmountains and back<\/a>, and found it to be not challenging at all, I wanted<\/span> to try something certain to challenge myself, so I put<\/span> together a plan<\/span> to\ndo a 100km<\/span> loop with intense mountain sequences that far exceeded what I'd\ndone before.<\/p>\n\n

Since then it's been quite cold with occasional snow<\/a>, so it\nwasn't until this past Saturday that I could<\/span> give it a try.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

The important parts of my outfit are by\nUnder Armour<\/a>, a maker<\/span> whose products I've liked<\/a>\nmore and more as I get<\/span> to know them, enough so that I eventually<\/span> bought their stock<\/a>.\nPrior to getting ready for this bike ride all their products I've bought have been in the “<\/span>Heat Gear”<\/span> line (to be worn when exercising in the heat),\nso I had<\/span> to buy new products for this winter event:\nCold Gear Compression Long-Sleeve Mock Shirt<\/a>,\nand\nCold Gear Compression Leggings<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Over the leggings I threw some old basketball shorts because I don't<\/span>\nhave the guts to go out in painted-on skin-tight pants, and over the shirt\nI threw<\/span> a thick<\/span> cotton long-sleeve shirt and my ultra-orange “<\/span>ninja jacket”<\/span>\nwindbreaker. I knew that<\/span> the combination of the cotton shirt and\nwindbreaker would conspire to accumulate moisture, and I'm sure it would\nhave been much nicer to have a real<\/span> workout-use jacket, but it's tough\nenough for me to find a size<\/span> that fits in The States, much less here in\nJapan via mail order, so I made<\/span> do with what I had.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

The box holds one GPS unit (a Garmin eTrex Legend HCx<\/a> that I bought<\/span> in\n2007), two GPS\/GLONASS<\/a> units (a Garmin<\/span> eTrex 20 that I bought<\/span> in 2011, and Bad Elf GPS Pro +<\/a> that I bought<\/span> a month<\/span> ago when I thought<\/span> I'd lost my\neTrex 20). I'm bringing<\/span> all these units so that later I can<\/span> compare the tracks from the various units, though mountain cover and\nopen road, in a similar<\/span> way to this informal test<\/a>.\nI didn't<\/span> want to just throw them in the side bag because I wanted<\/span> to ensure that they each had the same clear view of the sky,\nand so hence the makeshift box.<\/p>\n\n

The box also holds a Braven 710 Bluetooth speaker<\/a>, because it can be used\nas a USB<\/span> charger. The last 30km<\/span> of my intended route winds through small nameless countryside roads with dozens of turns,\nso I wanted<\/span> to make sure I had<\/span> juice for my iPad and its mapping software.<\/p>\n\n

Before getting started on my trip, I had one<\/span> quick stop to make...<\/p>\n\n

12-year-old Anthony was going to have his own ride, about 6km each way, to play with friends, and he wanted a bottle<\/span> cage on his bike. I thought<\/span> I might<\/span> get one as well, so we were at a nearby<\/span> bikeshop when they opened at 9am.<\/p>\n\n

Both with our new bottle cages, Anthony went on his way and I on<\/span> mine. I didn't<\/span> get long before I realized<\/span> I had<\/span> a problem.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

In talking about my plan on the Cycling Kyoto Facebook page<\/a>,\nthe guy who got me into cycling, Salvo Mannino<\/a>\n(seen here<\/a>) had suggested that I would<\/span> freeze myself to death\nif I made<\/span> it to the top of the mountain, because all the sweat that I'd accumulated on the way up would freeze me in the\ncoasting on the way down. So, I prepared<\/span> with these dire warnings in mind... except my feet.<\/p>\n\n

Cycling seems to be all about bringing as little with you as possible, and reducing the weight of everything you do bring,\nincluding the bike. Given any level of quality, a bike<\/span> that weighs 10% less than its peer might cost double. Anyway, in thinking of my\nshoes, I choose<\/span> some very light gym shoes that I'd picked up\nvia Zappos.com<\/a> the last time I was<\/span> in The States. I gotten<\/span> several different styles,\nand so had extra around to choose from. They weighed almost nothing.<\/p>\n\n

But even with two pairs of socks, at speed my toes got quickly cold... nothing about the shoes stopped the wind from\nripping through. So almost<\/span> immediately I stopped<\/span> by a convenience<\/span> store and asked for two of their smallest plastic bags. I put these<\/span> over my socks, then put my feet into the shoes, and hoped that the wind barrier would allow the socks to retain heat.<\/p>\n\n

I had to wait for the traffic light at Marutamachi Higashioji<\/a>, but when the light turned green for me, I took off<\/span> for what would\nbe more than 17km of non-stop cycling... I wouldn't<\/span> put my foot on the ground until\nlong past Kurama<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

At first I went along the river... no traffic \/ traffic-light worries...<\/p>\n\n

Me being the geoencoding geek that I am,<\/span> I built<\/span> a little<\/span> plugin for Adobe Lightroom for myself\nthat told me about the track between two photos. In comparing<\/span> the photo at the start near the big orange gate,\nand the photo above from the river, I see that<\/span> I'd ridden 2.3km over the course of seven minutes of riding (and 21\nminutes of waiting, at the bike shop, the convenience store, and traffic lights)...<\/p>\n\n

With the end of the river path I had<\/span> to ride on city streets, but there wasn't much city this far north, so there was little\ntraffic and few traffic lights, so I could<\/span> continue unimpeded up into the mountains. Until now it'd been a continuous<\/span> slight\nupslope toward the mountains, and I'd gained 65m elevation over the course of a leisurely<\/span> 8.4km of distance... an average slope of\njust 0.8% (80cm rise over 100m distance).<\/p>\n\n

5.8km (and 100m of elevation gain) later, I was quite<\/span> in the mountains...<\/p>\n\n

Prior to really diving into the mountains there had been a steep<\/span> rise followed by a steep<\/span> descent, the latter during which I\ncould<\/span> rest, but that had been a few<\/span> minutes prior to the above photo, and the road offered no further rests until the pass 560m\nhigher up, so if I wanted<\/span> to rest I had<\/span> to stop.<\/p>\n\n

But not yet.<\/p>\n\n

The village of Kurama is wedged in a narrow<\/span> valley along a road<\/span> that rises briskly (5.2% slope) toward the\nKurama Onsen (Kurama Hot Spring) at the far edge of town, with a river<\/span> in the backyard of those on one side of the road...<\/p>\n\n

That was the last civilization I'd see for a while.<\/span>.. moments later, the road looks like this:<\/p>\n\n

I continued on the increasingly steep grade for another 15 minutes before I took<\/span> my first rest.\nLuckily, modern technology existed to let me know that it was cold.<\/p>\n\n

Finally, at a rare wide spot in the road, I put my<\/span> foot on the ground for the first time in an hour, having gone\nnon-stop for 17.5km and 435m of elevation gain...<\/p>\n\n

I was tired. The average for the last 15 minutes was an 8% grade, and I was<\/span> increasing elevation at a rate<\/span> of almost 15m\/min. Not only was<\/span> the first time since I owned<\/span> the bike that I needed<\/span> to use the lowest of its 27 gears, but that's where I stayed<\/span> most\nof the time. The resulting<\/span> speed (7mph) was not much faster than a mild<\/span> jog, but at least I was<\/span> moving.<\/p>\n\n

I was worried that I would have a hard<\/span> time getting going again after a break.<\/span> I used to<\/span> do a lot<\/span> of running when I was<\/span> a teenager,<\/span>\nand found that if I needed<\/span> to rest I shouldn't<\/span> stop completely... I should<\/span> at least keep walking... because if I stopped<\/span> completely,\nit was very hard to get going again.<\/p>\n\n

But a different kind of exercise and three decades later, it turned out that the four-minute rest did wonders, and I hit<\/span> the\nroad with renewed vigor.<\/p>\n\n

A few minutes later I stopped again, but not to rest... this time it was to take my first proper photo of the trip...<\/p>\n\n

I was shocked to see the pass come so soon. I was tired<\/span>, but not wiped out as I thought<\/span> I'd be. I thought<\/span> I still<\/span> had a long<\/span> way to go.<\/p>\n\n

I used my iPhone to take a front-camera selfie with the intention to\nsend it to the Cycling group on Facebook, but I had<\/span> no cell reception\nthere. But here it<\/span> is.<\/p>\n\n

All in all it was 22.7km (14.1 miles) from the start. It took 1<\/span> hour 27 minutes of cycling plus another 9 minutes of rest\nsprinkled throughout the last three kilometers. I'm sure a<\/span> fit person could have done it in well under half the time. It took me<\/span> an even 60 minutes from Ichihara<\/a>\nto the top... a run<\/span> that's been done by someone in the Cycling Kyoto group in 33 minutes<\/a>.\n(I guess<\/span> I should<\/span> at least be pleased that my time wasn't double the best. \ud83d\ude09 )<\/p>\n\n

(21 minutes of the “<\/span>Time Resting”<\/span> was the bike shop,\nthe convenience store, and a couple<\/span> of traffic lights before hitting the\nriver.)<\/p>\n\n

Except for my shoes, which left my toes a constant<\/span> cold the whole way, my clothes were perfect and I felt<\/span> neither hot nor cold.<\/p>\n\n

Of course, the real test would be the next half hour as I coasted<\/span> down the other side of the mountain. The strong<\/span> breeze from the wind would cool my accumulated sweat considerably, and the lack of effort\nto coast down would not allow my body to heat itself back up again, so I'd find out how prepared I really<\/span> was.<\/p>\n\n

I felt good having done the 23km to get this far, but it was less than ¼ of the total route that I intended<\/span> to do for\nthe day, so I still<\/span> had much before me.<\/p>\n\n
