A continuation from part one<\/a> and\npart two<\/a> of my nighttime stroll during\na rare<\/span> snowstorom in Kyoto on the early morning of January 3rd.<\/p>\n\n

The photo above is much less impressive than the actual view was, with\nthe trees receding at various stages up the mountain in the background in\ncrisp relief to the temporarily-clear sky, it had a particularly<\/span>\nthree-dimensional feel, with added weight and depth due to the\nheavily-laden trees.<\/p>\n\n

I wish I would have made it a Wigglegram<\/a>.\nWhen this thought first popped in my mind as I wrote<\/span> the caption above, it\nwas as a joke,<\/span> because a wigglegram's<\/span> frames are usually captured in a\nburst<\/span> that lasts but a second<\/span> or so, and the shot above took 10 seconds\njust by itself.<\/p>\n\n

But now that I think about it, with nothing moving in the frame but the\nclouds and stars, I could<\/span> have spent a few<\/span> minutes and a bit<\/span> of care in\nmoving the tripod to capture frames from positions a meter<\/span> or two apart,\nand in between. Maybe next time.<\/p>\n\n\n

(The picture above is so tall and narrow because the wide-angle shot\ntaken up at an angle required quite a bit<\/span> of perspective correction to make\nupright things look upright, which if left uncropped leaves wedges of\nnon-image int the lower corners like this<\/a>, and I didn't<\/span>\nwant the wedges this time.)<\/p>\n\n

The dark blur in the middle of the street is a young<\/span> couple of about 20,\nwho had trudged through the snow to visit the Heian Shrine, presumably for\ntheir hatsumode<\/i>, a traditional<\/span> first visit to a shrine<\/span> in the new\nyear. They assumed, as I would<\/span> have assumed, that a shrine<\/span> as popular as\nthe Heian Shrine would be open continuously during the first few days of\nthe year.<\/p>\n\n

As it happened, during the big snowfall on January 1st<\/a>, I'd asked<\/span> a worker<\/span> at the shrine their hours, thinking that I might<\/span> show up early the next morning to get some\nsnowy photos of their garden (as I was<\/span> lucky enough to get seven years ago<\/a>). It turns<\/span> out that they keep normal hours, so the site is closed from 9pm until 6am (with the garden opening at about 8:30).<\/p>\n\n

It was about 12:30am when I talked to the young couple, so they had\n5½ hours to kill. They did an about face and trudged away.<\/p>\n\n

At least the view that they could see from the street was nice:<\/p>\n\n

The falling snow isn't very visible in the long exposure (two seconds) above, but it's quite evident in\nthis similar shot<\/a> posted the other day, which\nwas taken with a 1\/20th-second exposure.<\/p>\n\n

The snow was very sticky, and readily stuck on improbably-vertical surfaces, such as street-light poles...<\/p>\n\n

Different kinds of trees took the snow differently, with some barely getting any accumulation, but others\nhaving every little branch and twig swell fivefold in thickness with snow, such as this row of trees...<\/p>\n\n

The blur at left was an old lady walking. It was the<\/span> last person I saw<\/span> for two and a half<\/span> hours.<\/p>\n\n

The ultra-modern-design cement garage entrance to what I assume<\/span> is a very,<\/span> very rich persons house seemed quite at home in the snow.<\/p>\n\n

Yet equally at home just a few paces down the same wall was the warm non-car entrance...<\/p>\n\n

This got me thinking about entryways, and I ended<\/span> up photographing a\nbunch<\/span> of them. (The most tastefully presented was Larry Ellison's, seen here<\/a> as the lead photo of\nmy first post in this series, so all the ones I post<\/span> today will be\nsecond-tier at best.)<\/p>\n\n

As I mentioned\nin Part 2<\/a>, the snow finally let up at about this time and I could<\/span> use\nthe camera much more freely, without trying to protect it and the lens from\nsticky snow. The snow came<\/span> and went for the next three and a half<\/span> hours\nthat I was<\/span> out.<\/p>\n\n

When I first arrived at the Nanzen Temple (\u5357\u7985\u5bfa),<\/span> I set up<\/span> the camera at the base of the path leading up\nto the big entrance gate, and though it was quite dark (much darker than it appears in any of these photos), I thought<\/span> I should<\/span> have been able to see the murky outline of the gate, but I couldn't.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then I realized that I had to move 30m over to the next path. Doh!<\/p>\n\n\n

Going up the path, crossing over and through the gate to where the path continues on the other side,\nyou're greeted with this view of a main<\/span> temple building with a massive<\/span> roofed incense pot out front:<\/p>\n\n

This particular little section of path always makes me think of this photo of\nAnthony<\/a> when he was 4½. The incense<\/span> pot can be seen in more\ndetail in this\nshot<\/a> from a different<\/span> post.<\/p>\n\n

It was exceedingly dark where I took<\/span> this, and I couldn't<\/span> see much but an outline. A 20<\/span>-second exposure helps to make things clear. The map tells<\/span> me that it's an entrance to a “<\/span>Hojo Tearoom”<\/span> (\u5357\u7985\u5bfa<\/span>\u306e\u65b9\u4e08).<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Not far away was a set of steps and a couple<\/span> of entrances that were brightly lit, so this exposure is only 1.3 seconds long...<\/p>\n\n

I've been inside only once, two years ago, but it made an impression. I think<\/span> I snapped<\/span> over a thousand<\/span> photos during the visit, including one of\nmy early wigglegrams<\/a>,\nand these photos<\/a>. It's much quieter<\/span> at 3:30am.<\/p>\n\n
