She could have been commenting on my inability to set up the tripod, aim\nthe camera, and actually focus the shot properly in time, but I think<\/span> she was\ntalking about the weather.<\/p>\n\n

At 7am this morning I posted “<\/span>Kyoto At Night\nDuring a Heavy<\/span> Snow<\/a>”<\/span> after having spent the night wandering around my\narea of Kyoto with a camera<\/span> and tripod. I suspected<\/span> that the evening's snowfall had beat the\nrecord-breaking snow of the previous day, and indeed now after four hours\nof sleep I see<\/span> in the\npaper<\/a> that it was the 4th most snow on record for Kyoto city proper,\nand the most since almost a foot<\/span> and a half<\/span> fell one day in January 1954.<\/p>\n\n

Some folks were out and about, but for the most part I had<\/span> the area to myself.<\/p>\n\n\n

I like the snow when it's photogenic and I don't<\/span> have to drive (this event<\/a> several\nyears ago pretty much scarred my snow-driving confidence), but a quick<\/span> heavy wet snow\nhas its drawbacks. One problem<\/span> was keeping snow off the lens (I fumbled<\/span> with an\numbrella while trying to work the camera), and another was that snow or things weighted down\nby snow could come crashing down any time.<\/p>\n\n

Seconds after taking the shot above, one of the snow-laden big branches\nto the left came crashing down. The sound<\/span> as it was ripped from the tree\nand then crashed through other branches on the way to a huge<\/span> thud<\/i>\nwas impressive. (Photographically it was less impressive... a shot<\/span> 10\nseconds later merely shows an empty spot where the branch used to be.)<\/p>\n\n

When I was near the Heian Shrine I would<\/span> sometimes see folks out for a\nstroll,<\/span> or out to take pictures, or just walking home, but once I got<\/span> onto\nthe back streets, I went two<\/span> and a half<\/span> hours without seeing or hearing\nanother soul.<\/p>\n\n\n

The snow stopped for a while at about 1:30am and I could<\/span> work with the\ncamera a bit<\/span> more freely, but I was<\/span> well aware that huge masses of snow\ncould come down from the branches (or with<\/i> the branches) onto my\nhead and lens at any time. I was careful<\/span> and took calculated risks.<\/p>\n\n

Occasionally I'd hear the rending of a branch,<\/span> or more commonly the huge\nthump<\/i> of a big<\/span> pile of snow hitting the ground. Then in the Nanzen Temple\nI came<\/span> across a tree<\/span> that had quite-recently fallen...<\/p>\n\n

You can tell from the car tracks running right through it that the tree had fallen after most\nof the snow had fallen, but enough snow had accumulated on it to show that it hadn't just<\/i> fallen. It was now<\/span> 3:30am; I'm guessing it fell an hour or two prior.<\/p>\n\n

It fell in about the same location that these kids<\/a>\nare standing.<\/p>\n\n

I came back into civilization at about 4am at Sanjo Street, at The Incline<\/a>. It's an area<\/span> with a steep<\/span> hill that was put to use 120 years ago when Japan's\nfirst power generator was built, flinging water down the hill in pipes to\nslam into water turbines. I half expected<\/span> to find lots of abandoned cars\nand accidents, but there were just a couple<\/span> of taxis paused by the side of\nthe road...<\/p>\n\n
