As I mentioned in “<\/span>Oppressive Crowds at the\nShodensanso Villa<\/a>”<\/span> the other day, I paid my<\/span>\nfirst visit to the “<\/span>mountain cottage”<\/span> Shodensanso<\/i> (\u677e\u6bbf\u5c71\u8358<\/span><\/a>) this weekend. It's a half<\/span>-hour drive south-east from my place in Kyoto, just over the border into Uji City.<\/p>\n\n

From the makeshift parking area created for the special event, the path up to the villa looked like an empty river bed or canal.<\/p>\n\n

I didn't notice it at the time, but the lowermost tiles along the edge of the roof have the name\nof place embedded in them. I took a<\/span> photo of similar tiles at another spot when I noticed<\/span> it some hours later...<\/p>\n\n

The characters are clearly the name of the place, \u300c\u677e\u6bbf\u5c71\u8358\u300d,<\/span> backwards, but the form of the characters\nare quite different from normal. I recognize<\/span> one (how they wrote \u300c\u5c71\u300d) as being an archaic form, so perhaps\nthey all are.<\/p>\n\n

And speaking of odd ways to write the characters, the name of the place is also written large above\nthe main entrance, as seen in this detail shot:<\/p>\n\n\n

Again, it's written backwards, but the form used is the normal modern form except for\nthe one at the far right, which should be written \u300c\u677e\u300d, but instead\nhas the left\/right parts rearranged in an above\/below way\n\n as\u300c\u6728<\/span>\u516c<\/span>\u677e<\/span><\/span>\u300d.<\/span>\n\nI've never seen a “<\/span>rearrangement”<\/span> like this in Japanese, so I'm not sure what to make of it.<\/p>\n\n\n
