After yesterday's visit to the spectacular Yoshiminedera Temple<\/a> in south-western Kyoto,\nwe stopped for lunch at a restaurant<\/span> we happened across on the way to the next temple. It seemed<\/span> like an average lunch cafe, but it had a shocking<\/span>\nsurprise in store for us.<\/p>\n\n

Paul ordered the “<\/span>tuna sashimi (raw tuna slices) and avocado over rice”<\/span>\nlunch. At just 1<\/span>,200 yen (about US$10.50) one doesn't expect much fish, so\nhe ordered the large. What he got was a shockingly<\/i> large amount of\nfish... 8 to 10 times the amount expected.<\/p>\n\n

At first this brought to mind the excesses of the not-so-far-away Hagi Burger<\/a>, but those\ncomparisons soon melted away as we realized that the pile of tuna\nsashimi<\/i> was not propped up by an interior of rice... it was really\njust that big.<\/p>\n\n

We're not big on taking photos of everything we intend to shove in our mouth, but\nthis was just beyond ridiculous. The experience<\/span> required documentation.<\/p>\n\n

The Japanese word for a regular order is the regular word for “<\/span>regular”<\/span>,\nfutsuu<\/i> (\u666e\u901a).<\/span> The word for<\/span> a large<\/span> portion of food is\n“<\/span>oomori<\/i>”<\/span> (\u5927\u76db<\/span>\u308a). These are standard words you'll find on most any\nmenu, but Damien taught us two slang words that sort of help to describe\nthe situation.<\/p>\n\n

The next step beyond “<\/span>large”<\/span> is “<\/span>mountain<\/b> large”<\/span> yamamori<\/i>\n(\u5c71\u76db<\/span>\u308a), which is pretty easy to figure out as it calls to mind the image\nof food being piled up like a mountain.<\/span> I suppose<\/span> this is similar to\n“<\/span>super-size”<\/span> in American English.<\/p>\n\n

In America, some folks might add a next<\/span> step beyond “<\/span>super-size”<\/span> along the lines of “<\/span>Texas<\/b> size”<\/span>, but if you really want\nto go to the extreme... beyond plausibility right to the edge of possibility... you'll want the Japanese word for\nthe step beyond “<\/span>mountain large”<\/span> — such a ridiculously<\/i> large amount that you could only see it as\na wildly<\/span> exaggerated caricature in a Japanese<\/span> comic book — is called “<\/span>comic<\/b> large”<\/span>,\nwhich sounds so much better in actual Japanese:\nmangamori<\/i> (\u30de\u30f3\u30ac\u76db\u308a)<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n

The name of the restaurant is “<\/span>Kasuga”<\/span>, so I think<\/span> we have the birth of a new<\/span> slang word beyond manga mori<\/i>:\n“<\/span>kasuga mori<\/i>”<\/span>!<\/p>\n\n
