The grounds of the Kyoto Imperial Palace are open for tours most days, and like other imperial palaces in the area\n(Shugakuin<\/a>, Sento<\/a>,\nand, Katsura), holders of a foreign<\/span> passport can visit pretty easily. It's much more<\/span> difficult for a Japanese<\/span> citizen\nto visit, except during a special<\/span> open house for a few<\/span> days each year.<\/p>\n\n

During the open house, huge throngs of tourists (Japanese and foreign\nalike) visit, which makes it unappealing to someone who can visit on a\nless<\/span>-crowded regular-tour day, but after finally making my first visit to the palace last\nweek, I realized<\/span> a great<\/span> benefit to a photography<\/span>-minded visitor of going during the open house: you\ncan move at your own pace, and can stay as long as you like. (On the standard tours, your movements are\ntightly controlled and the group moves at a brisk<\/span> pace.)<\/p>\n\n\n

The palace is located within a larger city park that's always open to the public. Here's the Map view in Lightroom,\nwith the yellow marker near the top where I was<\/span> standing when I took<\/span> the photo above (aiming at the gate\nin the wall to the south west of the marker):<\/p>\n\n

The center block is the imperial palace, and as you can see from the other markers for other photos I took,<\/span>\nonly about half of the grounds are accessible to tourists.<\/p>\n\n

The gate in the north wall (seen above, from outside) is similar to the\nsouth-east gate seen in the three-lovely-ladies\nwigglegram<\/a> the other day, though that view is from the inside.<\/p>\n\n

The only other photo showing on the map outside the palace walls is this next one, of the main entrance gate, after we'd had\nour bags inspected by police...<\/p>\n\n

The first thing you see when you enter the grounds is a receiving<\/span> entrance to a palace<\/span> building. None of the buildings\nare open to the public, so the entrance is probably not used more than once or twice a century<\/span> (since the emperor no longer lives here).\nAnyway, I love the<\/span> detail in the construction of the ornate roof...<\/p>\n\n

The site has many buildings and courtyards and walls and areas, and\nsometimes the view through a door<\/span> would be across a courtyard<\/span> through\nanother door. I liked<\/span> the geometry.<\/p>\n\n

There's not much exciting here, but it's been a\nwhile<\/span> since I posted<\/span> something, so here we are. At the doorway<\/span> seen in the\nphoto above, I took photos<\/span> to make a\nwigglegram<\/span><\/a>, and so I've been stalled at this point in my photos because\nfor the last several days I've been consumed with improving my\nwigglegram-making software. It's really<\/span> been quite fun (though the math makes my brain melt). I find it<\/span> particularly interesting how different crops on the same set of photos can result in\nvastly different end effects. We'll see some examples soon.<\/p>\n\n\n
