We popped down to Hiroshima this weekend, and spent the night in\nMiyajima, near the Itsukushima Shrine.<\/span> A typhoon<\/span> is coming, so last\nnight's sunset was not too shabby.<\/p>\n\n

The shrine is notable for being in a tidal<\/span>\nplane with a huge<\/span> difference between high and low\ntides (the difference yesterday morning was 3.41m — more than 11\nfeet), so the look and feel of the area changes dramatically throughout the\nday. It's prettier<\/span> when the water is up, but it's\nmore interesting when the tide is out because you can walk around out past\nthe gate.<\/p>\n\n

On the way home this afternoon, the first drops of Typhoon #19 (“<\/span>Vongfong”<\/span>) started\nhitting as we pulled into Hiroshima Station to switch to a bullet<\/span> train. The typhoon<\/span> will hit there in earnest\ntomorrow, with it forecast to reach Kyoto by the evening.<\/p>\n\n

It's the middle<\/span> of a\nthree<\/span>-day weekend, so I thought<\/span> travel\nwould be relatively calm and uncrowded, but normal reserved seats on every\nbullet train for hours were sold out. The thought<\/span>\nof having to stand for the two-hour trip to Kyoto was unappealing, so we\nopted for “<\/span>Green Car”<\/span> seats, where we could indeed get a reservation<\/span> to Kyoto. “<\/span>Green Car”<\/span> seats are\nfour to a row,<\/span> instead of six, so it was nicer.\nIt was also<\/span> much more expensive, of course,\nbut we were<\/span> lucky to get them; by the time we got\nto Osaka, the entire train was sold out, and the moment we arrived in Kyoto, a\nconductor<\/span> arrived to make sure our seats were empty, presumably for the few lucky folks with confirmed reservations from Kyoto.<\/p>\n\n
