The past few months have conspired to keep me mostly inactive, with\ntravel, injuries, and colds weighing me down for most of the summer, but\nI'm finally feeling pretty good, so when I came<\/span> across some photos of a\nprevious<\/span> hike up Kyoto's Mt. Hiei<\/span> while tidying up my photo archive, I thought<\/span> it\nwas about time to try it again, so the next morning I did it<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n

Luck would have it that Damien<\/a> was available to give it a try,<\/span> so we met\nat the trailhead yesterday morning at 8:00.<\/p>\n\n

This was my fifth hike of the mountain. I brought<\/span> a full<\/span>-frame SLR the\nfirst<\/a>,\nsecond<\/a>, and\nthird<\/a> times.\nOn the fourth<\/a> I just<\/span> brought the iPhone,\nbut because the camera lacks quality (and the battery lacks endurance) I thought<\/span> maybe\nI'd get a step<\/span> up with a small<\/span> compact camera we have lying around, but wow was I wrong.<\/span> The photo<\/span> quality is just pathetic. So sorry<\/span> about that.<\/p>\n\n

Damien has had his head buried in a startup<\/span> business for almost the last\nyear, so hasn't gotten out for much exercise, so this was a sudden<\/span>\nchallenge for him. Still, he did much better than I did<\/span> my first time.<\/p>\n\n

My clothes are all about function.<\/p>\n\n

The leggings and shirt are from Under Armour's “<\/span>Heat Gear”<\/span> compression\nline (which I've written about in the past here<\/a> and here<\/a>).\n\nThey're designed to be worn when it's hot, to wick away sweat and keep you\ncool. They do a fantastic<\/span> job of it.<\/p>\n\n

These versions are of the “<\/span>compression”<\/span> type, which means the stretchy fabric\nwears like a second<\/span> skin. They have non-compression versions that apparently wick just as well,\nbut I like<\/span> the compression\naspect because it makes you feel<\/i>\nmore comfortable; it eliminates the sticky\/clingy\/yucky feeling of\na wet<\/span> shirt. It's just\nalways<\/span> there, so you don't feel any wet “<\/span>cling”<\/span>, and you also\ndon't feel sweat dripping down your back\/arms\/whatever. It's really<\/span> just so<\/i> much more comfortable than\na non<\/span>-compression shirt such as\nthe Uniqlo “<\/span>Dry”<\/span> T<\/a>\nthat I wrote<\/span> about a couple<\/span> of years ago. I still<\/span> wear those when I'm\nnot exercising, but they're comparatively horrible for exercise.<\/p>\n\n

I could get white and navy colors at Amazon Japan, but to add some variety\nto my workouts while in The States this summer I picked<\/span> up orange, bright blue\n(to match my eyes, you know), and just to be odd, purple.<\/p>\n\n

A side note about the company that makes these, Under Armour<\/a>...<\/p>\n\n

When I first gave them a try<\/span><\/a> I\nnoticed<\/span> the really high quality of their product right away, a feeling<\/span> that\nhas only strengthened over the months as I've tried more products. But on top<\/span> of that, while in The States for the summer, over the course of many\nvisits to a trampoline<\/span>\npark<\/a>, I noticed<\/span> that Under Armour was the predominant brand that the\nkids were wearing. Not Nike, not Adidas, not Umbro, not New Balance, not\nChampion. Five year olds, 10 year olds, 15-year olds (and adults).<\/p>\n\n

These kids are already voting with their parents' money, and will soon\nvote with their own. Under Armour, it seems, is “<\/span>cool”<\/span> with the young generation,\nand I think<\/span> this bodes very well for Under Armour's future because one's idea\nof style sticks with us as we age.<\/p>\n\n

(When I was a kid in the 70s and 80s, a red<\/span> sweater vest was the epitome\nof “<\/span>old”<\/span> and “<\/span>grandpa”<\/span>, because back then, that's what old men wore.\nThey wore it because they thought it looked good, because when they<\/i> were kids in the 40s and 50s,\nit did<\/i> look good. Back then, a red<\/span> sweater vest was the epitome of preppy cool, and that\nfashion sense stuck with the men even though it didn't stick with the general culture.)<\/p>\n\n

This certainly wasn't the limit of my research, but I ended<\/span> up buying a\nfew<\/span> shares of Under Armour\nstock<\/a>. With a market<\/span> cap of $15B it's quite risky... that's 1\/5th the\nmarket cap of Nike, but the company doesn't “<\/span>feel”<\/span> like it has nearly that\nmuch presence, so it's got to grow into its pricing. In most trailing<\/span> comparisons\nto Nike<\/a> it seems overpriced,\nbut it's smaller and has more momentum, so those expectations are built into the current price. On Wall Street<\/span>, “<\/span>expectations”<\/span> can be quite fickle, so it wouldn't surprise me to see this\nstock level out for a year<\/span> or two at half its current price, but it also wouldn't surprise me to see\nit much higher five and ten years out.<\/p>\n\n

We'll see. I'm in at $69.61\/share.<\/p>\n\n
