This won't mean a thing if you don't know this game, but if you do, I hope your<\/span> jaw is suitably on the floor at that score.<\/p>\n\n

When I still had the\ncold that I recently<\/span> got over<\/a>, I would<\/span> sometimes pass the time playing the simple game\n“<\/span>2048”<\/span>. I played<\/span> on my phone, but anyone can play for free at\nthe creator's website<\/a>.\nIt's fun and<\/span> addictive.<\/p>\n\n

During this sick time a game would last a few<\/span> minutes, and I could<\/span> get a\nscore<\/span> of about 2,000. Anthony and I had<\/span> a running<\/span> competition, and at first\nhe could do better than me. But as my<\/span> cold subsided, I got better<\/span>, and with\nluck, could get a score<\/span> of 5,000 and once even 7,000.<\/p>\n\n

Then a few days ago I got one hint of strategy online, and boom, my\nscores started going up. This hint got me paying attention to the gameplay\nin a different<\/span> way, and from there I came<\/span> up with some important rules of\nthumb that really caused my scores to explode. 12,000 then 29,700, then 33,000.<\/p>\n\n

Unfortunately, the games started lasting longer and longer, and when I'm\nnot sick I just<\/span> don't have the time to waste on games. If I could<\/span> limit\nmyself to filling lost time (like in the bathroom or while stretching at\nthe gym) I do<\/span> it, but I don't<\/span> have that kind of willpower, because it's quite fun.<\/p>\n\n

Today's last game was sweet. Things were just humming along perfectly like a machine.<\/span> Here's a screenshot<\/span> I took<\/span>\nat one really nice moment... this means nothing if you don't know the game, but if you do, you can imagine what\nthe next few moves will yield...<\/p>\n\n

Things started to unravel when I allowed<\/span> myself to get into a situation<\/span> where I had<\/span> no choice but to move down,\nalong the lines of this mockup I made<\/span> in Photoshop:<\/p>\n\n

So I had to move down, and of course a “<\/span>2”<\/span> tile pops up right where the “<\/span>4096”<\/span> tile was, and that started things falling apart.<\/p>\n\n
