I'm finally getting around to photos from last November, when old Yahoo\nco-worker Sergey Kolychev paid me a visit.<\/span> (He's not old, our co-worker\nstatus is).<\/p>\n\n

In the intervening three years since his prior visit<\/a> he'd\nbecome fluent in Japanese to the point that he can read novels, which just\nblows my mind. Japanese is at least his fourth language (after Ukrainian,\nRussian, and English), so maybe they get easier as they stack up.<\/p>\n\n

We packed quite a bit into one day. We started<\/span> out with a visit<\/span> to the Heian Shrine...<\/p>\n\n

We then popped over to the Nanzen Temple...<\/p>\n\n

We somehow found a little hiking trail back beyond the Eikando Temple, which provided a nice<\/span> view of the city through the trees...<\/p>\n\n

People often put up little wooden plaques as a memorial<\/span> of their hiking trip,\nsuch as the bigger board above placed by a group<\/span> of 13 people ranging from\n79 years old down to five months old. I wouldn't<\/span> have paid the crow a\nsecond<\/span> thought, but Sergey noticed that it was a three<\/span>-legged crow, which\nis apparently a thing<\/span><\/a>. You learn<\/span> something new every day.<\/p>\n\n

When then moved north to the Hounen-in Temple (\u6cd5\u7136\u9662),<\/span>\nwhich has appeared on my blog of late\nhere<\/a>,\nhere<\/a>, and\nhere<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

The thin depth of field in this next shot makes it looks a bit<\/span> unreal...<\/p>\n\n

This next shot, of Sergey standing under the gate, looks a bit<\/span> unreal because I made<\/span> a mistake<\/span> and severely underexposed it, so had to employ\nHDR-like post processing<\/a> to recover a usable<\/span> image...<\/p>\n\n

Growing boys must be nourished, so we repaired over to\na tea<\/span> cafe<\/a> for choux \u00e0 la cr\u00e8me<\/i>...<\/p>\n\n

I opted for coffee, but Sergey is a connoisseur<\/span> of fine tea, as Fumie can be sometimes, so I've been to this shop many times.<\/p>\n\n

Sergey mentioned some knee pain that had been bothering him\nfor a long<\/span> time, so I\nbrought<\/span> him to the best masseur in Kyoto, Kentaro Kataoka<\/a>. Sergey had never\nhad a real<\/span> massage before, so it was quite an\nexperience.<\/p>\n\n

I've had many massages in America, but after having had massages in\nJapan, I'd never<\/span> classify what I had<\/span> in America as a real<\/span> massage. They're\nmore like “<\/span>shove some skin around a bit<\/span> and hope it relaxes you”<\/span> sessions.\nThese in Japan are closer to physical therapy. In a blog<\/span> post about Japanese\nmassage<\/a> a couple<\/span> of years ago, I described<\/span> this masseur's technique as\n“<\/span>a ferocious<\/span> pinpoint attack like his fingertips are tactical weapons trying to massage the muscle from the inside out<\/i>”<\/span>. It can be<\/span> very effective, but painful at the time.<\/p>\n\n

Sergey thought the whole experience was great, so I'm glad that\nKataoka-sensei was able to work us in at short notice. He'd been out<\/span> for his daily jog when I called,<\/span> and kindly cut it short just for us.<\/p>\n\n

This was at a temporary location at the time, but since then he's opened a permanent shop\nnear Teramachi Nijo<\/a>. Highly recommend.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, newly refreshed, we popped over to the Chion'in Temple (\u77e5\u6069\u9662)<\/span> to see its big main gate...<\/p>\n\n
