(<span class='nobr'>I guess<\/span> the point of wearing\nan $85,000 Patek Philippe that you can't read is to advertise that you can afford to wear\nan $85,000 Patek Philippe that you can't read.)<\/p>\n\n<p>Unfortunately, this Fossil Townsman was horrible.<\/p>\n\n<p>The hands, which look bright in the photo, are actually dark metal with\n<span class='nobr'>a mirror<\/span> finish. <span class='nobr'>If they reflect<\/span> something bright then you see them as\nbright. (Photos make it look more busy than it really seems.)<\/li>\n<li>Has <span class='nobr'>a name<\/span> with an umla\u00fct. Makes it look old-world classy. \u00dcmlaut means class, you know.<\/li>\n<li>Safe to swim with, so safe in the rain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>The bad:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class='nobr'>I wish<\/span> it was <span class='nobr'>a bit<\/span> bigger, much thinner, and had <span class='nobr'>a cleaner<\/span> design around the outside edge.<\/li>\n<li>Such <span class='nobr'>a low<\/span> price for an automatic (self-winding) watch brings worry about quality.<\/li>\n<li>The date and GMT boxes are too small\/difficult to read even with glasses. <span class='nobr'>I didn't<\/span> even bother setting them.<\/li>\n<li>Luminescent features (hands and dots around the face) are worthless. This is apparently <span class='nobr'>a well<\/span>-established racket of inflated\nratings used across the watch industry. Water resistant to <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>10 meters<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> makes you think it's okay to shower or swim? Its primary attraction for me is that despite\nbeing <span class='nobr'>a quartz<\/span> it doesn't ever need <span class='nobr'>a battery<\/span> change because it gets\ncharged via light through the face. <span class='nobr'>The manual<\/span>\nsays that two minutes in direct sun will keep it running for half <span\nclass='nobr'>a year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>It's quite readable, but again, the luminescent features are worthless.\nWhen <span class='nobr'>I was<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a kid<\/span> you\ncould <i>literally<\/i> read <span class='nobr'>a book<\/span> by the\nbrightness from the luminescent hands of <span class='nobr'>a kid's<\/span>\nwatch, but these days it's all worthless. Geez, <span class='nobr'>a\nlittle<\/span> radioactivity never hurt anyone.<\/p>\n\n<p>This Citizen is the same size (42mm) as the St\u00fchrling, so <span\nclass='nobr'>I wish<\/span> it were <span class='nobr'>a bit<\/span> bigger,\nbut this one is less of <span class='nobr'>a fashion<\/span> statement.\n<span class='nobr'>Not that I<\/span> have much to do with fashion\nstatements anyway. <span class='nobr'>I can't<\/span> read the date (so didn't bother setting it), but\nhey, <span class='nobr'>19~this one<\/span> is water resistant to 100m!<\/p>\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I mentioned in the comments on last month's post about horrid watch-marketing copy, I've been looking for a nice watch with a combination of features and simplicity and size that no one seems to make.
