While driving around the sparsely-populated coastal\/mountain area of\nwestern Aomori Prefecture at the northern end of Japan's main island\nduring a short<\/span> family trip last week, in the middle of nowhere we suddenly\ncame across something billing itself as “<\/span>Japan's largest waterwheel”<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n

It seemed at least a bit photogenic, so I stopped<\/span> for a quick<\/span> look.<\/p>\n\n

The tree in the lower left of the photo above hosted the “<\/span>Dark, Brooding Camellia<\/a>”<\/span>\n(\u4e59\u5973\u693f)<\/span>\nthat I posed<\/span> last week.<\/p>\n\n

The “<\/span>dark brooding”<\/span> was because of an underexposure. A shot soon<\/span> after was way overexposed, but I think<\/span> I recovered<\/span> something interesting(?) in Lightroom...<\/p>\n\n

I suppose the one above is not the best example from the tree, but I was<\/span>\nstill happy with some of the shots that I got.<\/span> Then the other day my friend\nAkiko posted some\ncamillia shots on her blog<\/a> that put mine to shame. I've got to try\nharder next time.<\/p>\n\n\n

One could wander up to the top of the service building where the wheel's\naxle came in. I didn't<\/span> see a soul<\/span> the whole time I was<\/span> at the property, so\nI hope<\/span> it was okay that I went<\/span> up. The view out<\/span> the window was nice...<\/p>\n\n

I have no idea what the large concrete stairway structure is at left. I also had<\/span> no idea at the time where the water came to drive the wheel, but\nthe base seemed improbably dry to be driven by a stream.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

I eventually found a video<\/span> showing the\nwheel in action<\/a>, but it was a disappointment<\/span> because it seems that\nwater is pumped up a pipe<\/span> to the top of the thing, then poured over it,\nwhich means they use more energy to drive the wheel than they can get out\nof the wheel, so it's all fake. I'd sort of<\/span> hoped it was some real vestige\nof years past.<\/p>\n\n

Oh well.<\/p>\n\n

In my search I also found that there were multiple places claiming “<\/span>Japan's largest waterwheel”<\/span>. I hadn't<\/span> realized that\nthere was competition for the distinction.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, at least the cherry blossoms were nice.<\/p>\n\n
