{"id":2414,"date":"2014-04-26T21:54:17","date_gmt":"2014-04-26T12:54:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2014-04-26\/2414"},"modified":"2014-04-26T21:54:17","modified_gmt":"2014-04-26T12:54:17","slug":"not-recommended-best-western-newcity-hirosaki-hirosaki-japan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2014-04-26\/2414","title":{"rendered":"Not Recommended: Best Western Newcity Hirosaki (Hirosaki, Japan)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<p>We're on a short family trip to Hirosaki <span class='nobr'>(\u5f18\u524d)<\/span> at the northern end of the main Japanese island of Honshu. <span class='nobr'>It's cold enough<\/span> up here that their cherry blossoms are three or four weeks later than in Kyoto, and are now at their peak.\nThere's also snow still on the ground in some shaded areas, despite being well into the 70s (~25C).<\/p>\n\n<p>Our hotel is the <a\nhref='http:\/\/www.bestwestern.co.jp\/hirosaki\/access.html'>Best Western Hotel\nNewcity Hirosaki<\/a>, and <span class='nobr'>I don't<\/span> recommend it if moronic policies bother\nyou. <span class='nobr'>It's hot and<\/span> muggy, but the room <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>air conditioner<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> works only as <span class='nobr'>a\nheater<\/span> until May 1st, after which it will work only as <span class='nobr'>a cooler.<\/span> These\ndates are set in stone in their policy, despite the fact that Mother Nature\nalmost certainly has not gotten the memo.<\/p>\n\n<p>True, it's unusually hot for this time of year; on <span class='nobr'>a normal<\/span> year, you'll\nbe toasty until May 1st after which you freeze until spring catches up. <span class='nobr'>The normal<\/span> year is as imbecilic as this, just in the reverse order.<\/p>\n\n<p>It mirrors a particular Japanese fetish with the changing seasons\nwhereby uniforms (worn by school children, factory workers, etc.) switch\nfrom the winter version to the summer version on April 1st, regardless of\nthe actual weather. There are many things that <span class='nobr'>I love<\/span> about Japan, but mindless stupidity\nis not among them.<\/p>\n\n<p>When I called the front desk of the Best Western to ask about how to get\nthe cooler running, the lady suggested that <span class='nobr'>I open<\/span> the window. <span class='nobr'>I wasn't<\/span>\nlooking forward to bugs flying in on <span class='nobr'>a hot<\/span> muggy night, so <span class='nobr'>I asked<\/span> to\nborrow <span class='nobr'>a room<\/span> fan. They didn't have any.<\/p>\n\n<p> Sigh. So, I opened the window and was greeted to nonstop pop music\nblasting from low-quality outside speakers at <span class='nobr'>a game<\/span> center across the\nstreet. <span class='nobr'>The music<\/span> likely can't be heard inside... its only purpose, it\nseems, is ostensibly to attract folks who want to enter <span class='nobr'>a gaming<\/span>\nestablishment through <span class='nobr'>a gauntlet<\/span> of low-fidelity pop music. Maddening.<\/p>\n\n<p>It's almost 10pm.
