At St\u00e9phane Barbery's suggestion that the Kitano Tenmangu Shrine's plum were ripe for the photographic picking, I popped<\/span> over for a quick<\/span> 45-minute visit\ntoday.\nThis is the same place I wrote<\/span> about a week<\/span> or so ago, both in\n“<\/span>Kyoto Plum-Blossom Preview: Scenes From a Year<\/span> Ago Today<\/a>”<\/span>\nwhere I talked<\/span> about how Feb 22 was too early for the plum blossoms, and\nin the less blossom-centric post “<\/span>The Many Lanterns and Overwhelming Sumptuousness of the Kitano Tenmangu Shrine<\/a>”<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n

It was chilly (~10C \/ 50F), but a pleasant,<\/span> relaxed atmosphere...<\/p>\n\n

The shot above doesn't really “<\/span>work”<\/span> because the only thing in focus is the group of people in the far background,\nleaving the big gate building in the foreground annoyingly and dominatingly out of focus. I'd intended<\/span> it this way\n(the group of people are in line to pay respects, as\ndescribed on this post<\/a>), but nah, the result doesn't work.<\/p>\n\n

From about the same vantage, toward the side I noticed<\/span> a tree<\/span> growing out of the stump of its ancestor (perhaps a fitting<\/span>\nimage for reincarnation) net to some kind of cow statue...<\/p>\n\n

Having noticed that one of the\nlanterns was dated 1879<\/a> while writing a recent<\/span> post, I checked<\/span> out a\nfew<\/span> more lanterns for dates today. The closest<\/span> of these three is dated 1866...<\/p>\n\n\n

I didn't take too many blossom photos because I've already got plenty (as a click<\/span> on the “<\/span>nearby photos”<\/span> link under any of these photos will show),\nbut you can't visit during plum-blossom season without taking at least a few.<\/span> \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n

The real draw of the place is the plum orchard, which costs about $6 to\nenter. I didn't<\/span> have time to do so today, but from what I could<\/span> see from\nthe temple's main gate (the photo below), it was starting to fill in\nnicely... much better than two weeks earlier in the\nseason<\/a> when it's mostly bare....<\/p>\n\n
