The New York Times Travel section recently published the article “<\/span>36\nHours in Kyoto, Japan<\/a>”<\/span> (thanks Ed Pouso for the link), and one of the locations the author visited is the delightful\nOtaginenbutsuji Temple (\u611b\u5b95\u5ff5\u4ecf\u5bfa)<\/span> in the northern Arashiyama area of Kyoto.<\/p>\n\n

I thought it was a missed opportunity that the article didn't include a\nphoto<\/span> from the temple, which reminded me that although I've visited the\ntemple twice, in both the spring and fall of 2012, I'd not yet<\/span> gotten\naround to posting anything. My own missed<\/span> opportunity, of which my photo\ncatalog holds so many. Sigh. So until<\/span> I can<\/span> do a full<\/span>-on post, here are a few<\/span>\ndesktop backgrounds of some of the 1,200 statues — ranging from\nwhimsical and silly to serious and pious — that dot and fill the\nmountainside location.<\/p>\n\n

(The author of the NYT article writes the name of the temple\nas “<\/span>Otagi Nenbutsu-ji”<\/span>,<\/span> but in this post I write<\/span> it the way the\ntemple itself writes it: “<\/span>Otaginenbutsuji Temple”<\/span>.<\/span> In any case, the actual<\/i>\nname is “<\/span>\u611b\u5b95\u5ff5\u4ecf\u5bfa<\/span>”<\/span>.)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

To be clear, the captions are the feelings that I ascribe<\/span> to the statue\nas I look<\/span> at them today while writing this post. I don't<\/span> know what the\noriginal sculptors intended to convey, but I suspect<\/span> the point of the\ncollection is to let each piece evoke in the viewer whatever it evokes.\nAlong those lines, perhaps I should<\/span> not put any caption at all.... (?)<\/p>\n\n
