Well, that wasn't fun. While at Anthony's soccer game the other day, I pulled<\/span> my iPhone out of my pocket to find that\na couple<\/span> of apps had been “<\/span>pocket deleted”<\/span>, with the screen showing the dialog to confirm the deletion of a third.<\/span> Apparently I put<\/span>\nthe phone in my pocket without deactivating the screen, and it bumped around in there in the just<\/i> the appropriate way to\njump through the hoops to delete an app. Twice. I should<\/span> have had my pocket play the lottery that day.<\/p>\n\n

I've been “<\/span>pocket dialed<\/i>”<\/span> by friends before... the call comes in\nand all I hear<\/span> is background noise or them chatting with someone without\nrealizing that their phone has called me. This is the first time I've heard\nof apps getting deleted by accident this way, and the first time I've\npersonally experienced my phone doing “<\/span>pocket”<\/span> anything, other than sitting\nthere.<\/p>\n\n

To make things worse, the two apps that had been deleted where the two\napps I use<\/span> the most (WhatsApp\nMessenger<\/a> and Find\nmy Friend<\/a>), and to make it even super worster, those two apps have a\nlot<\/span> of local data (permissions, history, connections, etc.) that are\ngone the moment you delete them, requiring a lot<\/span> of hassle to set up again,\nso I couldn't<\/span> just re-download from the Apple App Store™ and continue on my merry way.\nArrrgh!<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n

To avoid having to set up the apps again, I had the<\/span> bright idea of\nrestoring the phone from a recent<\/span> backup once I got<\/span> home. iTunes makes a\nbackup<\/span> of the phone data when syncing, and I'd done it recently, so I\nthough<\/span> it would be a simple<\/span> matter of pressing the “<\/span>restore from backup”<\/span>\nbutton in iTunes, but no, that results in a frustratingly<\/span> final error\nmessage: \"iTunes could not restore the iPhone because not enough free\nspace is available on the iPhone.<\/i>\" This made no sense to me because I\nwasn't<\/span> asking for a second<\/span> copy of everything to be added to the phone, but\na simple<\/span>(?) rsync<\/a>-like\n“<\/span>make sure what's supposed to be there is actually there”<\/span> synchronization. It was extra<\/span> frustrating because the error message gave no hint on how to\nproceed.<\/p>\n\n

It turns out that the way around this is to reset the phone to its\nfactory settings, then<\/i> restore from backup. After doing the reset,\niTunes treated it as if it was a new<\/span> phone, asking “<\/span>Do you want to set this\nup as a new<\/span> phone, or restore from the ‘<\/span>Jeff's iPhone’<\/span> backup we found\nlying around?<\/i>”<\/span><\/p>\n\n

I restored<\/span> from backup, and 40 minutes of “<\/span>doing stuff”<\/span> in\nthe background later, my phone was back to its pre-“<\/span>pocket delete”<\/span><\/span> glory. I'll have to be more careful next time.<\/p>\n\n\n
