Here are some more frost patterns from arctic Ohio, following up from\nthe one I posted<\/span> the other day<\/a>. It was -10°F\n(-23°C) with strong biting wind when I took<\/span>\nthese, by hand, outside in the wind, up hill both ways. According to the\nimage data, I lasted<\/span> two minutes 10 seconds\nbefore I couldn't<\/span> stand the pain in my fingers\nany more and gave up: considering that I had<\/span>\nheavy insulated gloves, it's a testament<\/span> to\neither just how very cold it was, or how very wimpy I\nam.<\/span> Probably both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I tried a variety of processing on these to mix things up. They're all\nessentially monochromatic, except something behind the window sometimes\nshowed up as a brown<\/span> splotch in the background, so I turned<\/span> those to black & white,<\/span> and while I was<\/span> at it I used<\/span>\nLightroom's half-tone feature to make the “<\/span>white”<\/span> (of “<\/span>black & white”<\/span>)<\/span> on some of them (such as the one\nleading this post) slightly blue.<\/p>\n\n

On the other hand, the next shot is shown in all its full-color glory...<\/p>\n\n\n

I really need to figure out some kind of jig or brace so that I can<\/span> use\nmy favorite macro lens<\/a>\nhandheld in the field, but with more stability than just holding the lens\nfreehand.<\/p>\n\n

I'm pretty steady<\/a>\nwith the camera, but when these photo were taken — maximum aperture\nat maximum magnification — the depth of field was thinner than the\nice crystals I was<\/span> photographing. That made it extremely difficult to hit\nfocus in the first place, but even worse, any slight off-axis tip would\nmean that only part of the image could possibly be in focus if at all.<\/p>\n\n

That's why some of these shots are pretty aggressive crops; even if the frost pattern\nis interesting, the photo is not interesting if half of it is out of focus, so in some cases I cropped<\/span> out a lot.<\/span> In the shot<\/span> above, 60% of the original is cropped away. The photo<\/span> below has 55% of its original cropped away.<\/p>\n\n

When my fingers couldn't take the cold any more, I did take<\/span> the trouble\nto step back and get a shot<\/span> to show the context....<\/p>\n\n

There were other windows, each with completely different kinds of frost patterns.
