{"id":2346,"date":"2013-11-29T19:31:02","date_gmt":"2013-11-29T10:31:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2013-11-29\/2346"},"modified":"2013-11-29T19:31:02","modified_gmt":"2013-11-29T10:31:02","slug":"not-a-good-day-for-photography-in-the-friedl-household","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2013-11-29\/2346","title":{"rendered":"Not a Good Day for Photography in the Friedl Household"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<p>I once complained that I had <a href='\/blog\/2011-07-15\/1820'>ruined every photo before <span class='nobr'>I even<\/span> took it<\/a> by accidentally leaving\nthe camera in low-quality JPEG mode (instead of <a href='\/blog\/2007-10-08\/598'>raw mode<\/a>, which gives\n<a href='\/blog\/2009-02-28\/1154'>much latitude in recovering<\/a> from exposure mistakes).<\/p>\n\n<p>Today I did myself one better.<\/p>\n\n<p>After driving 2&frac12; hours last night to <span class='nobr'>a hotel<\/span> near <span class='nobr'>a particular<\/span>\nspot where <span class='nobr'>I wanted<\/span> to make <span class='nobr'>a sunrise<\/span> photo with the family, we got up at\n5:15 and by 6am we had parked and were ready for the 30-minute hike to the\nlocation, when <span class='nobr'>I took<\/span> my first shot of the day, of <span class='nobr'>a picturesque<\/span> ridgeline\nwith <span class='nobr'>a dull<\/span> warm 40-minutes-before-sunrise light beyond.<\/p>\n\n<p>The photo that popped up on the back of the camera was stunning: the sky\nthat seemed almost black in person was now in the photo <span class='nobr'>a deep<\/span> rich blue at\nthe ridge with <span class='nobr'>a lovely<\/span> gradient to black at top. <span class='nobr'>The day was<\/span> starting off\nexceptionally well, except....<\/p>\n\n<p>... except that unfortunately, <span class='nobr'>I always<\/span> have my cameras set to\n<i>not<\/i> show each photo on the back of the camera immediately after\ncapture (because it wastes battery), so the photo suddenly popping up meant\nonly one thing: the camera was in <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>demo mode<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> like it would be at the\nstore, because I'd forgotten to put in <span class='nobr'>a memory<\/span> card. Doh!<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Sigh.<\/p>\n\n<p>The camera and lenses all went back into the car, and we made the hike\nsans camera.
