The Seifuso Villa (\u6e05\u98a8\u8358) near Kyoto University was a private<\/span> residence\nfor centuries before being donated to Kyoto University in the 1950s, which\nnow preserves it as a cultural<\/span> treasure. Thanks to the kindness of a friend<\/span>\nwho teaches at the university, I was able<\/span> to take a tour<\/span> of the villa last\nweek.<\/p>\n\n\n

This simple gate is on a path that leads to a small<\/span> tea house where the\nresident might meet afternoon callers of sufficient distinction to merit\nsuch a setting.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Careful inspection of the ground under the edges of the roof that would otherwise\nbe moss shows a black<\/span> stripe. It goes around<\/span> on all sides...<\/p>\n\n

This is, of course, the subject of the “<\/span>What am I?”<\/span> quiz from\nlast week<\/a>. The black<\/span> stripe is made up of charcoal logs buried\nedgewise. One sees this<\/span> occasionally at temples where water might drip\ndown, providing what I suppose<\/span> to be a surface<\/span> less prone to erosion and\nits unsightly results.<\/p>\n\n
