Fall-foliage season, long over with in most of the Northern Hemisphere,\nis just getting into full swing in Kyoto. Throwing common sense to the\nwind, I dared<\/span> to venture to the Arashiyama area of Kyoto yesterday\n(Friday), where the density of tourists during this season threatens to\nform a singularity.<\/span> Adding to the mass of folks, I went with<\/span>\nPaul Barr and Damien Douxchamps.<\/p>\n\n

We limited ourselves to a few temples on the northern fringes of Arashiyama, and so we avoided the most oppressive crowds.<\/p>\n\n

The first stop was my first visit to the Hokyo-in Temple (\u5b9d\u7b50\u9662),<\/span> which\nincludes a picturesque<\/span> path that naturally attracts the camera. The shot above<\/span> recalls last week's “<\/span>Why Does Photography with an\niPad Look so Silly?<\/a>”<\/span>, though the lady wrapped in understated class also\ncalls to mind the followup article, “<\/span>iPad Photography: This Guy is\nDoing it Right<\/a>”<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We then moved over to Heiankyo<\/i>, which seems to be a private<\/span>\nresidence\/park-ish kind of place not normally open to the public except\nduring rare special openings, one of which was going on yesterday.<\/p>\n\n

The next stop was the almost-impossible-to-find Enrian Temple (\u53ad\u96e2\u5eb5)<\/span> whose frontage on the street totals about four feet. A long narrow<\/span> path connects the street to the temple grounds...<\/p>\n\n

Finally we found our way to the Takiguchi-dera\nTemple (\u6edd\u53e3\u5bfa),<\/span> next to the Gioji Temple<\/a> that has\nbeen on my blog so many times<\/a>. I'd never<\/span> actually taken the extra 10 steps up to the Takiguchi-dera\nTemple, so today we did...<\/p>\n\n

The Takiguchi-dera Temple, much less popular than Gioji just below it on\nthe mountain, was a quiet<\/span> respite from the crowds.<\/p>\n\n

Damien and Paul then went to Gioji and elsewhere, but I was<\/span> feeling a\nbit<\/span> out of energy by this time so I called<\/span> it a day.<\/span> But it was<\/span> a\nphotogenic<\/span> day, to say the least, so there's much more to post when time\nallows.<\/p>\n\n\n
