Over the years I've posted many sunsets from the Shogunzuka Overlook (\u5c06\u8ecd\u585a)<\/span> in eastern Kyoto, from\nspectacular<\/a> to\nquiet but nice<\/a> to the most common: downright bland<\/a>. It's been a<\/span> source of occasionally dynamic views<\/a> for a long<\/span> time, but the practical reality is that for\nevery one time I show<\/span> something from up there, I've visited and returned empty-handed many times.<\/p>\n\n

Overall, the median experience is, basically, a waste<\/span> of time.<\/p>\n\n

I tend to keep track of the sky's potential for a nice<\/span> sunset throughout\nthe day, all while mentally juggling my schedule to see whether a trip<\/span> up\nto the overlook for the sunset is even possible. I've properly predicted\nmost of the great sunsets I've seen, but that's only because my\never-optimistic view almost always “<\/span>predicts”<\/span> a great<\/span> sunset... it's just\nthat I'm wrong 99% of the time.*<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n

In the face of such predictable failure, some might consider my repeated\nvisits to be “<\/span>persistence”<\/span> or “<\/span>perseverance”<\/span>, but I think<\/span> it's more “<\/span>hope”<\/span>. Some day it'll pay off.<\/p>\n\n

On a visit up there a week or so ago, the first views as I approached<\/span> from the parking lot were promising, as seen above.<\/p>\n\n

The weather was dynamic, with occasional wisps of rain being swept in on\nthe wind from a cloudburst<\/span> sweeping across northern Kyoto, and this gave us\na weak<\/span> rainbow for a moment.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

The two guys in the lower left are trying to take the classic “<\/span>sun held between forefinger and thumb”<\/span> shot. The head of<\/span> my shadow at right is the center of the rainbow's arc.<\/p>\n

Having come to see the sunset (which is, by definition, in the opposite direction of any rainbow), no one else seemed to notice the rainbow, so I mentioned<\/span> it...<\/p>\n\n
