The other day in “<\/span>Getting Back Out with the\nCamera a Bit<\/span><\/a>”<\/span> I mentioned<\/span> that I stopped<\/span> by the famous Itsukushima\nShrine (\u53b3\u5cf6\u795e\u793e)<\/span> on Miyajima Island (a bit<\/span> south of Hiroshima, Japan). I arrived<\/span> at sunset on a gloomy<\/span> day that was already dark, and\nstayed for just half an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n

Deer roam the area freely, and are quite docile. This is in stark\ncontrast to Nara, where the deer are extremely aggressive, taking your food\nright out of your hand or shopping bag if you're not quick enough to\nprotect it. I should<\/span> write up a post<\/span> about that.<\/p>\n\n

Some jerk used a stone lantern to dispose of a soda<\/span> bottle. I've seen\nthis kind of thing daily in this country for 20+ years, but it still\nboggles my mind each time.<\/p>\n\n

As darkness quickly descended, incandescent floodlights conspired with the deepening blue of the overcast sky to make for some increasingly rich results.<\/p>\n\n

This shot is color balanced for the incandescent floodlights lighting\nthe scene from camera left. That color-balance choice accentuates the blue of everything else lit\nby the fading post-sunset overcast sky. It seems<\/span> that something about the ridge tiles (their material, finish,\nshape, or angle) causes them to be highly reflective of that deepening-blue sky, giving somewhat of a neon<\/span> effect here.<\/p>\n\n

For what it's worth, here's a daylight view from the same location six years ago, during a higher<\/span> tide (and aiming a bit<\/span> further to the right)...<\/p>\n\n
