Sensationalist<\/a>\nheadlines are always a problem<\/span> in American media,\nbut now I'm seeing it in Japan as well. As I\nwrite<\/span> this, Kyoto has partly cloudy skies and chirping birds, but\nTokyo 400km to my east is getting absolutely shellacked<\/i> by powerful\nTyphoon #26 of the season.<\/p>\n\n

Yet, it was with surprise that I saw<\/span> this headline on the Japan Times (major English daily in Japan) web site:<\/p>\n\n

“<\/span>Largest typhoon in decade heads toward Tokyo<\/a><\/b>”<\/span><\/center>\n\n

This “<\/span>largest in a decade<\/span>”<\/span> surprised me, so I immediately<\/span> switched to back to\ncurrent data about the typhoon<\/a>, screen captured here for posterity:<\/p>\n\n

The maximum wind of 50 m\/s (112mph) is powerful, but doesn't seem to be\nthe most powerful I've seen even recently, much less in all the last 10\nyears, so the headline perplexed me.<\/p>\n\n

Going back to the article, the first line of prose gives the answer:\n“<\/span>The strongest typhoon to reach Tokyo in 10 years...<\/i>”<\/span>. Ah, I see.<\/span>\nSomeone apparently decided that an honest headline wasn't\nattention-grabbing enough. Sigh.<\/p>\n\n

Incidentally, Typhoon #18 that caused flooding in Kyoto<\/a> (among\nmuch else) a month<\/span> ago was much weaker wind-wise,\nbut for whatever reason was amazing water-wise, producing “<\/span>once in\na generation<\/span>”<\/span> rain\nover wide areas.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, the next few hours should be quite lively for the folks in Eastern Japan, so best wishes for them....<\/p>\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
