Last week's “The Effect of Shutter Speed on the Appearance of Flowing Water<\/a>” post\nreminded me that I had<\/span> not finished the story I started<\/span> a year<\/span> ago in\n“On The Way From The Kuuya-taki Waterfall<\/a>”, so I'll go ahead and do that now.<\/p>\n\n

In that story about my first visit to the Kuuya-taki waterfall<\/a>\n(\u7a7a\u4e5f\u6edd),<\/span> upon returning to the road, Nicolas Joannin<\/a> and I\nfound<\/span> another path going up a different<\/span> direction and decided to take it to\nsee where it went, and soon came across this sign:<\/p>\n\n

The temple's name means “Ring\/Circle of the Moon”.<\/p>\n\n

The path was easy, but often steep...<\/p>\n\n

After a half an hour of unrelenting ascent, we came across a bench<\/span> and a sign<\/span> that took the wind out of our already-slumping sails...<\/p>\n\n

We were pretty much wiped out by that point, so decided to leave the temple for another day.<\/p>\n\n

On the way down we caught sight of someone else descending the mountain, but they weren't on the path...<\/p>\n\n

Set back but not defeated, I returned a few<\/span> days later to try again.<\/p>\n\n

The road that leads there doesn't go anywhere else (it dead ends), and\nis pretty dangerously thin\/steep\/crumbly, so even though there's something\nthat might be called a road,<\/span> you feel already in the middle of the\nwilderness by the time you start on the paths to the waterfall or the\ntemple. So it was<\/span> with some surprise that I came<\/span> across a mailman.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n

We chatted a bit... it turns out that the post office makes normal daily\ndelivery service to the temple an hour up the mountain, and to another\ntemple an hour further beyond that. Wow.<\/p>\n\n

I had a head start on him because he had to change to his hiking\nclothes, but he caught up to me quickly...<\/p>\n\n

The estimate of an hour for the climb was dead on... 60 minutes exactly\nafter starting up on the path, I broke<\/span> out into the clearing at the temple,\nand received my first nice view...<\/p>\n\n\n

To provide a bit of context, when clicking through to the larger version of the photo above, you'll be able to see two bridges near the center\nof the frame. The bridge<\/span> at the sharp bend in the river to the left of center is the one I was<\/span> standing on when I took<\/span> this shot last December:<\/p>\n\n

That was the lead post in “Revisiting December\u2019s Arashiyama Outing: Dynamic Vistas and the Suzumushidera Temple<\/a>”. The hike to<\/span> the Tsukinowa-dera Temple is, I'm guessing, up one of the taller mountains in the background.<\/p>\n\n

The other bridge, just south of the center of that frame, is Arashiyama's famous Togetsukyo Bridge (\u6e21\u6708\u6a4b),<\/span> seen previously over the years on my blog\nhere<\/a>,\nhere<\/a>, and\nhere<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Back to the hike up the mountain...<\/p>\n\n

Unfortunately, after having hiked the hour up, there wasn't much of\ninterest to my camera... a few<\/span> rustic buildings, and that's about it.<\/p>\n\n

The temple is at the red dot near the center, 60 minutes from the\nwaterfall (highest dot on the river) and 50+10 minutes from the Atago\nTemple (which is on the highest peak overlooking Kyoto).
