I visited the gardens of the Heian Shrine (\u5e73\u5b89\u795e\u5bae)<\/span> the other day with\nAeron<\/a>. The shrine's\ngarden is best known for its cherry blossoms<\/a>, and\nit looks pretty nice when\nit snows<\/a> (which is rarely), but it's quite pleasant any time of year\nfor those who take the time to enjoy it.<\/p>\n\n

On our visit, we weren't the only ones enjoying the many colors of\nhydrangea. This little hoverfly seemed to be enjoying his all-you-can-eat\npollen buffet.<\/p>\n\n

I didn't expect to get much of a shot<\/span> of the little guy... he was far\nenough away from the path that I really<\/span> had to lean over just to try to get\nclose, so I was<\/span> unstable to begin with, and this is all hand-held in the\nshade. On top of<\/span> all that, with the close-up macro of the Voigtl\u00e4nder 125mm\nf\/2.5<\/a>, the depth of field was razor thin.<\/p>\n\n

But I took a lot of shots and hoped to get lucky, and did to some extent.<\/p>\n\n\n

The colors were exquisite, but they get washed out when adjusting for the hoverfly. Here's the same flower from further back, sans bugs:<\/p>\n\n

I also came across a less-obliging insect, a bee,<\/span> who fritted here and\nthere more quickly.<\/p>\n\n

In the shot above, even though the bee's choppers are in focus, the\nfocus feels wrong because the eyes (or what seem to be eyes to the\nnon-entomologist) are out of focus, and it seems to be a\npretty<\/span> strong rule of composition that if eyes are in the frame and\nanywhere close to the focus, they should be in focus because as humans,\nthat what we focus on first. I guess.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Still, I like the “small world made big” feel of the shot.<\/p>\n\n\n
