Picking up from yesterday's “Anatomy of a\nPhotoshoot<\/span> by Someone Who Has No Clue About Them<\/a>”, the rambling story\nof a photo<\/span> shoot of first-time model Yuko by clueless photographers (Paul\nBarr and me), yesterday ended with Yuko sitting in the shade in front of a\nlake<\/span> on the grounds of the\ndazzling Fushimi Inari Shrine<\/a> (\u4f0f\u898b\u7a32\u8377\u5927\u793e)<\/span> in Kyoto...<\/p>\n\n

When it was my turn, I shot a few different looks before I realized<\/span> that\nI wasn't<\/span> really getting any of the background...<\/p>\n\n

The shallow depth of field, which I normally<\/span> like a lot,<\/span> made the\nbackground completely irrelevant, losing out on the pretty shrine building\nand the lake that would have added to the shot. Perhaps my squished nose\nwas cutting off oxygen to the brain...<\/p>\n\n

I tried stopping down the aperture considerably to bring in more of the\nbackground, but it was just too bright, so my whole approach was wrong....<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had better luck when Paul shot her again, and I ignored<\/span> the background...<\/p>\n\n

Then it was off to continue exploring the expansive shrine grounds, and more fun and games...<\/p>\n\n

At one point I found a place that I could<\/span> get to a high<\/span> vantage above\nYuko, so tried some very feminine poses that might take advantage of the\nsituation...<\/p>\n\n

The two photos above being a case in point, it never ceases to amaze me\nhow two photos can be both “almost identical” and “utterly different” at\nthe same time, when the slight difference is in facial expression or other\n“body language” element that humans are inherently attuned to.<\/p>\n\n

Once she got comfortable, it was hard to go wrong with Yuko. “Look this way”,\n“Play with your hair”, “Think of you future husband”, “Think of a cute<\/span> puppy”, etc.\n(To be clear, instructions like these don't usually result directly in the look you're after, but they lead\nto more back-and-forth banter and the associated roller-coaster of fleeting facial expressions, which you then\npluck into immortality in 1\/500th<\/sup><\/sub> of a second<\/span> increments.)<\/p>\n\n

This is where this post's lead photo (“Girl Next Door<\/a>”) came in.<\/p>\n\n

The whole while I'm taking these shots, my camera “owns” Yuko's attention, but Paul is making his own\nphotos to great success. At the same<\/span> time as my “Girl Next Door” shot, Paul got this one:<\/p>\n\n

Paul didn't stand up completely straight, and so ended up being too<\/i> close to Yuko, resulting in\na perspective<\/span> that's generally not quite so appealing for portraiture...<\/p>\n\n

We interrupted our shoot to give our attention to another young, highly-photogenic model...<\/p>\n\n

Yuko tried in roughly the same spot, but the lighting was a bit<\/span> top heavy...<\/p>\n\n

I had her try spinning her head so that her hair would fly like in a shampoo<\/span> commercial, but that wasn't working either...<\/p>\n\n

But she was always photogenic while ignoring the camera and just chatting with Paul...<\/p>\n\n

I used this photo at the top of part one<\/a> of this series. I really<\/span> like it.<\/p>\n\n

Paul and I again switched places. I'll end this part of the series with two photos taken at about the same time. I love both<\/span>, but Paul's is better...<\/p>\n\n
