Zak<\/a> needed a headshot<\/span> for\nsome kind of online profile related to his shakuhachi-flute\nplaying<\/a>, so I met<\/span> up with him for five minutes yesterday morning at a\ncoffee<\/span> shop for a quick<\/span> shoot.<\/p>\n\n

The lighting was horrible — mixed fluorescent, LED, incandescent, and\ndaylight — so we should have moved elsewhere, but time was short so we went\nwith it. (I lost<\/span> quite a bit<\/span> of time on the way because I found<\/span> someone's\nwallet in the middle of the street, and it took a while<\/span> to find a police<\/span>\nbox that was manned, and then there's paperwork involved in turning it in,\nand such.)<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, I like the B&W treatment above, but here's the uncropped color version...<\/p>\n\n

Zak himself prefers this next shot instead. The difference<\/span> in mouth and eyes from above is\nquite subtle, but the result is vastly different, I think.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Zak likes this one, but I think it's relatively flat. The eyes are<\/span>\nessentially unchanged from before, yet somehow this one seems to lack the\ntwinkle and life of the first. At least, that's my view.<\/p>\n\n

Zak's view is probably just him trying to project his cynical side, but I've known\nhim long enough to know what's really<\/i> behind that fa\u00e7ade, well revealed in\nthe following shot:<\/p>\n\n

This was the first “formal” (so to speak) portrait I've done of Zak, but I've snapped plenty of shots of him\nwhile sitting across the table from him at a coffee<\/span> shop, such as\nthis one<\/a> from January, or\nthis one<\/a> from five years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
