\nUPDATE (AUG 1):<\/b> I initially<\/span> thought that the bug discussed in this article was fixed in the Lightroom 5.2<\/span> beta release,\nbut the bug still persists. )-:<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n

Lightroom 5<\/span><\/b> was released the other day, and in my blog post about it<\/a>, I warned<\/span> about a potentially<\/span> insidious Publish-related bug that could cause\nyou to “do stuff” on different photos than it appeared you were working\nwith. Since “do stuff” could mean “delete these images”, at worst this\nmeans that you could accidentally delete images from your disk without even\nrealizing you'd done it.<\/p>\n\n

The folks on the Lightroom team at Adobe have always been most generous\nto me with their time and attention, and that remains the case with this\nbug, and we've been working together on understanding it. At this point<\/span>, I can report<\/span> that things are both better and worse than I initially<\/span>\nthought.<\/p>\n\n

It turns out that with effort, I can<\/span> reproduce the bug in older versions\nof Lightroom (Lr3 and Lr4), so at least in one manifestation, this is not a\nnew<\/span> bug. It's telling<\/span> that I didn't<\/span> notice the bug in the four years I've\nworked with Publish, and I didn't<\/span> hear about it from any of the hundreds of\nthousands of folks who use my plugins. This makes me feel that it must be\nan exceptionally rare<\/b> bug, and that somehow I just<\/span> got unlucky in\nthat I'm hitting the bug easily after the upgrade to Lr5. If this is<\/span> true,\nthe “general alarm” of my initial post is unwarranted.<\/p>\n\n

However, the fact that I and others didn't notice<\/i> the bug doesn't\nmean that I and<\/span> others weren't affected<\/i> by the bug; the insidious\n“silent killer” nature of it means that you simply don't know exactly the\nramifications unless you happen to catch it right away. If you are<\/span>\naffected, but don't catch it right away, it may be days or months or years\nbefore you notice that something was done to the wrong image, or not done\nto the right image.<\/p>\n\n

Clearly this is a Big Deal if you're bit by this bug, but we just don't\nknow how widespread it is in the wild. Perhaps I'm the only one who\nactually suffers from it in Lr5, and that as such it's just unfortunate for\nLightroom's PR that I happen<\/span> to have a well<\/span>-trafficed blog.<\/p>\n\n

The investigation continues; I'll post updates as warranted.<\/p>\n\n

In any case, I continue to find what's new in Lr5 indispensable, and I\nheartily<\/span> recommend it. But for now<\/span>, when working in Publish, I suggest<\/span> always keeping the Filmstrip open and making your selections there.<\/p>\n\n
