{"id":2270,"date":"2013-06-12T18:47:27","date_gmt":"2013-06-12T09:47:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2013-06-12\/2270"},"modified":"2013-06-12T18:47:27","modified_gmt":"2013-06-12T09:47:27","slug":"an-update-on-the-lightroom-5-publish-grid-bug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2013-06-12\/2270","title":{"rendered":"An Update on the Lightroom 5 Publish Grid Bug"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<div style='border:solid 1px #833; padding: 3px 1em; padding-right:1em'><p>\n<b style='color:#F66'>UPDATE (AUG 1):<\/b> <span class='nobr'>I initially<\/span> thought that the bug discussed in this article was fixed in the <span class='nobr'>Lightroom 5.2<\/span> beta release,\nbut the bug still persists. )-:<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n<p><b><span class='nobr'>Lightroom 5<\/span><\/b> was released the other day, and in <a\nhref='\/blog\/2013-06-10\/2268'>my blog post about it<\/a>, <span class='nobr'>I warned<\/span> about <span class='nobr'>a potentially<\/span> insidious Publish-related bug that could cause\nyou to &#8220;do stuff&#8221; on different photos than it appeared you were working\nwith. Since &#8220;do stuff&#8221; could mean &#8220;delete these images&#8221;, at worst this\nmeans that you could accidentally delete images from your disk without even\nrealizing you'd done it.<\/p>\n\n<p>The folks on the Lightroom team at Adobe have always been most generous\nto me with their time and attention, and that remains the case with this\nbug, and we've been working together on understanding it. <span class='nobr'>At this point<\/span>, <span class='nobr'>I can report<\/span> that things are both better and worse than <span class='nobr'>I initially<\/span>\nthought.<\/p>\n\n<p>It turns out that with effort, <span class='nobr'>I can<\/span> reproduce the bug in older versions\nof Lightroom (Lr3 and Lr4), so at least in one manifestation, this is not <span class='nobr'>a\nnew<\/span> bug. <span class='nobr'>It's telling<\/span> that <span class='nobr'>I didn't<\/span> notice the bug in the four years I've\nworked with Publish, and <span class='nobr'>I didn't<\/span> hear about it from any of the hundreds of\nthousands of folks who use my plugins. This makes me feel that it must be\nan <b>exceptionally rare<\/b> bug, and that somehow <span class='nobr'>I just<\/span> got unlucky in\nthat I'm hitting the bug easily after the upgrade to Lr5. <span class='nobr'>If this is<\/span> true,\nthe &#8220;general alarm&#8221; of my initial post is unwarranted.<\/p>\n\n<p>However, the fact that I and others didn't <i>notice<\/i> the bug doesn't\nmean that <span class='nobr'>I and<\/span> others weren't <i>affected<\/i> by the bug; the insidious\n&#8220;silent killer&#8221; nature of it means that you simply don't know exactly the\nramifications unless you happen to catch it right away. <span class='nobr'>If you are<\/span>\naffected, but don't catch it right away, it may be days or months or years\nbefore you notice that something was done to the wrong image, or not done\nto the right image.<\/p>\n\n<p>Clearly this is a Big Deal if you're bit by this bug, but we just don't\nknow how widespread it is in the wild.
