This post is a continuation from Part 1 of “Kyoto\u2019s Amazing Haradanien\nGarden<\/a>”, with a bunch<\/span> more photos that I hope<\/span> gives a sense<\/span>\nwhat it's like to visit at the height of cherry-blossom season.<\/p>\n\n

I'll explain below why Haradanien (\u539f\u8c37\u82d1)<\/span> is wonderful despite\nthe crowds, but make no mistake, it's very crowded.<\/p>\n\n

It's crowded, but the layout of the garden, with wandering paths on a hillside,<\/span> is masterful. There are people behind the lady\nposing above, but you can't see them, and that works well with the first rule of photography:\n“If It's Not in Frame, It Doesn't Exist<\/a>”.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

It works the same when you visit without the camera: the warm sense of enjoyment that\nI've dubbed “Cherry Blossom Joie de Vivre<\/i><\/a>” permeates the experience,\nand the annoying part of “crowd” inexplicably seems to melt away.<\/p>\n\n

There must be millions of individual blossoms in the garden, but sometimes one or two just\nstick out and grab your attention as being particularly appealing\n(such as those seen in “Subtle Pastel Blossoms at Kyoto's Haradanien Garden<\/a>”),\nand in this next shot Damien<\/a> is photographing such a blossom.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n

He's borrowing my favorite lens, the Voigtl\u00e4nder 125mm f\/2.5<\/a>,\nbecause it's a macro<\/span> well suited to close-ups of dainty things<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

I tried it myself later when he returned the lens, but the result doesn't at all live up to my expectations. )-:<\/span><\/p>\n\n

That one particular blossom had really caught my eye and I expected<\/span> to be wowed by the results, but they're just okay. I took one<\/span> “establishing” shot of the blossom in context, and in looking at it now, I wonder<\/span> what I saw<\/span> in it. It's in the<\/span> center of this shot:<\/p>\n\n

While Damien used my Voigtl\u00e4nder, I was borrowing<\/span> his Nikkor 200mm f\/2,\nwhich is the baby brother of my 300mm f\/2<\/a>. The feel of<\/span>\nthe focus ring of his lens is the most delicious I'd ever used, and I\nimmediately<\/span> wanted to get one.<\/p>\n\n

I haven't yet had the time to look through my shots with the 200mm f\/2\nto actually evaluate the results, but it's telling that many of the shots I\npicked<\/span> for this “vibe” post are from that lens.<\/p>\n\n

Here's one more with his lens that I gussied<\/span> up with just a bit<\/span> of Lightroom “Funky Joy”<\/a> that\nblossoms are so amenable to (such as seen here<\/a> and here<\/a>, among dozens of\nother posts on my blog).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
