I'll follow up my post\nabout Restaurant “Kiev”<\/a> with another Kyoto restaurant of note, Men-Baka\n(“Noodle Idiot”, \u3081\u3093\u99ac\u9e7f\u4e00\u4ee3),<\/span> which Damien Douxchamps<\/a> brought me to.<\/p>\n\n

The proprietor saw my big camera and warned that I'd be too dangerous to\ntake photos of my own ramen, so suggested that I take<\/span> the opportunity to\nphotograph a pair<\/span> of high-school boys receiving theirs.<\/p>\n\n

The proprietor was a riot. With the dead-serious voice reserved for\ntopics of grave concern, he had the boy with longish hair pick out a\ncolorful<\/span> hair scrunchie and proceeded to apply it to his front bangs,\nciting the impending danger of the flames.<\/p>\n\n

Of course the little bit of hair didn't make the slightest difference\none way or the other, so the scrunchie and the grave concern was all just a\njoke,<\/span> but I don't<\/span> think the kids realized it because the man was so\nserious. It was pretty<\/span> funny in retrospect.<\/p>\n\n

The set of instructions one receives before the meal is<\/i>\nimportant, and long... keep your hands behind your back, don't flinch,\ndon't touch the bowl nor the table until given the okay, etc. At this point<\/span> none of us\nknew what exactly was coming, so we all listened carefully.<\/p>\n\n

Then it was my turn. This flaming ramen is called negi ramen<\/i> (\u30cd\u30ae\u3089\u3081\u3093), or “scallion ramen”.<\/p>\n\n

I didn't get to photograph my fiery display, but I could<\/span> pull out the camera once things had settled down.<\/p>\n\n

If you have a camera, the proprietor takes a picture<\/span> for you with your\ncamera, directing you with the same grave seriousness to a ridiculous<\/span>\nmouth-agape pose. I'd seen it<\/span> with the two high-school boys, so was able to\ntemper my pose a bit,<\/span> but it's still silly:<\/p>\n\n
