Yesterday's post (“Photo Shoot at Kyoto\u2019s Haradanien Garden: John and Ai<\/a>”) has inspired me to\nat least start to try to show the magnificent Haradanien Garden (\u539f\u8c37\u82d1)<\/span> in north-west Kyoto, a few<\/span> kilometers in the mountains behind the\nKinkakuji “Golden Pavilion” Temple. I'd made my<\/span> first visit last week and from that trip had posted so far only\none wigglegram<\/a>, and then visited a few<\/span> days ago for the photoshoot with John and Ai,\nand from that visit also posted some subtle pastel blossoms<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Having entrusted my route to get there to Google Maps on my iPhone, I unknowingly<\/span> ended up at a minor<\/span> secondary entrance on the opposite side of\nthe garden from the main entrance. This was wonderful because it meant that\nI had<\/span> a large<\/span> part of the garden just to myself for a while,<\/span> before people\nfiltered up from the main entrance. It was also<\/span> nice because I was<\/span> spared\nwhat I found<\/span> out on the second trip to be a decidedly<\/span> unappealing\nexperience of loud hordes outside the main entrance.<\/p>\n\n

I was surprised to find that the entrance fee was ¥1,200, double\nwhat I might<\/span> have expected before seeing the garden. After having seen the garden at peak blossom season,\nthough, the price seems low.<\/p>\n\n

It alternated between sun and clouds (and even rained a bit<\/span> toward the late afternoon), and so the light was changing often,\nas did the view depending on whether you were under the canopy or looking out a portal.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n

Despite that the crowds can grow quite thick, the layout of the gardens\n— paths crisscrossing on a many<\/span>-leveled hillside separated by a large<\/span>\nvariety of flowers, trees, and shrubs — enables many photographic possibilities.\nI was constantly<\/span> surprised at the kind of shots I could<\/span> get...\nlong, sweeping shots showing just one person or one small group in frame,\ndespite the pulsating throngs of people.<\/p>\n\n
