On Sunday we made a short visit to our next-door neighbors, a pleasant<\/span>\nretired couple with grandkids ranging from a bit<\/span> older than Anthony to\nadult. Fumie and Anthony had plans, so we intended to stop in just to say\n“hi” and show off Anthony, whom they hadn't seen in two years.\n\n<\/p>

\n\nWe stayed for about 15 minutes, and left as Anthony started to get a bit<\/span> fussy.\n\n<\/p>

\n\nFive minutes later, as Fumie got Anthony situated in the car for them to go\nout, we realized why he was getting so fussy: his entire face was breaking\nout in hives<\/a>. We immediately<\/span> suspected a cat<\/span> allergy: the couple had a cat<\/span> they hadn't had\nbefore.\n\n<\/p>

\n\nIt just kept getting worse, and within a few<\/span> minutes his whole face was\nswollen, as were parts of his arms. But other<\/span> than watering eyes, it didn't seem\nto bother him too much. He wasn't having trouble breathing, or anything\nlike that, so I wasn't<\/span> too worried about it. We gave him<\/span> a light<\/span> shower to\nrinse off the cat dander or whatever it was, and gave him an ice cream to\nenjoy while we monitored the situation.\n\n<\/p>

\n\nIt was then that I noticed that his eyes were swollen, too. His eye\nlids<\/b> had been swollen from the beginning, but now I noticed<\/span> that the\nwhites of his eyes themselves<\/b> were swelling. The swelling<\/span> was the\nsize of a lima<\/span> bean, and partially obscured his pupil.\n\n<\/p>\n \n

\n\nThis sort of freaked me out.\n\n<\/p>

\n\nFumie was less freaked out than I, and in fact had noticed the eyeball\nswelling some time before I did.<\/span> She had previously<\/span> seen something similar\nwhen I had<\/span> pinkeye<\/a> two\nyears ago, so took it in stride.\n\n<\/p>

\n\nStill, I gave my<\/span> ER-nurse sister a call<\/span> to consult. She suggested<\/span> getting\nhim in front of a doctor,<\/span> so I looked<\/span> up a close<\/span> urgent-care clinic (via\nthe always convenient Yahoo! Yellow\nPages<\/a>) and brought him in. After 15<\/span> minutes of paperwork and 40 minutes\nof waiting, a doctor<\/span> looked at him.\n\n<\/p>

\n\n“Yup, seems to be an allergic reaction. It'll get better by itself,\nbut you can give him some Benadryl or Clariton if you want. May as well<\/span>.\nWorry about eyeball damage? Nah, the eyeball is very tough.”\n\n<\/p>

\n\nBy the time we got out and could get some Benadryl, he was mostly\nrecovered, except for he eyeball and the lower eyelids. By the next<\/span> morning\nhe had recovered completely.\n\n<\/p> \n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
