Following up on “Temple Hopping in Kyoto with Katrin Philippar<\/a>” from the other day, I left off<\/span> as we entered the Kiyomizu Temple.<\/p>\n\n

Photogenic sights abounded, but it was really crowded.<\/p>\n\n

The lady in Kimono stood there for the longest time (multiple minutes), waiting for an opportunity for a nice<\/span> shot for\nher photographer at the bottom of the stairs. Few people<\/span> bothered to give her a wide<\/span> berth, and I suppose<\/span>\nthat's understandable because it was crowded and the steps were for everyone, but the lady in black right next to her\nin the shot above seemed in particular determined to spoil any good shot, because she hovered in the immediate vicinity\nnot just for a while,<\/span> but for the entire time the girl stood there.<\/p>\n\n

I eventually stopped paying attention, but later noticed them at the top of the steps when I was<\/span> up there as well...<\/p>\n\n

A nice atmosphere of fun and enjoyment can make up for otherwise-oppressive crowds. I saw it<\/span> originally in “Cherry-Blossom Joie de Vivre<\/i> in Kyoto<\/a>” and many times since,\nincluding yesterday at Gosho<\/a>. But it doesn<\/span>'t necessarily show up in photos, so something\nlike this next shot is perhaps only cringe worthy...<\/p>\n\n

I'm lacking a photo for context, but next to where I took<\/span> the shot above was a wall<\/span> with the most delicate little flowers.\nEach flower was little larger than the head of a pin.<\/span>...<\/p>\n\n

After taking the winding path down to where the long stairway had descended to, we came across\nthe Boy Scouts at the otowa no taki<\/i>...<\/p>\n\n

This looks like a path, but it's actually the sloped wall of a huge<\/span>\nembankment, with folks leaning over a railing<\/span> just out of frame to the top. I'm not sure<\/span> what I was<\/span> expecting when I took<\/span> it, but the results are a bit<\/span>\ndisappointing.<\/p>\n\n

I ended up using his camera to snap a shot<\/span> of him and his lady. Sharp dressed and a gentleman<\/span> to boot. I would<\/span> have liked the chance to have a beer<\/span> with him\n(but I suspect<\/span> he drinks whiskey).<\/p>\n\n

Leaving the temple grounds, the surrounding streets were packed well past the “pleasant” stage...<\/p>\n\n

We escaped from the crowds down the pleasant alleyway that leads to the great restaurant that I wrote<\/span> about\nlast year in “Delicious Yuba Lunch at Junsei<\/a>”....<\/p>\n\n

The yuba lunch set at Junsei<\/i> is a great<\/span> value... for\n¥2,150 you get a wide<\/span> variety of little foods, all very Japanese, and\nthe fun experience of combining it with yuba that forms in front of your\neyes. Katrin, in her first trip to Japan, enjoyed every aspect of it, as do\nI every<\/span> time I go<\/span> there.<\/p>\n\n

After lunch we dove back into the crowds...<\/p>\n\n

Of course, when I complain about the crowds, the old billboard text\ncomes to mind: “You're not stuck in traffic. You\nare<\/i> traffic.” \ud83d\ude42<\/span> In these cases, I try to<\/span> turn the crowds to\nmy advantage by snapping interesting(?) pictures of them.<\/p>\n\n

It's in this mess of people that the lovely ladies in\n“Impromptu Kimono Photo Shoot Near the Kiyomizu Temple<\/a>”\nfound a wonderful<\/span> background for their shots.<\/p>\n\n

Somewhere in the small streets as we got further from the bedlam, we came across a display<\/span> of art\nthat clearly took skill to produce, but as with all art, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and in the eye\nof this beholder (me), this art was hideous beyond words.<\/p>\n\n
