In the 80s my folks hosted an exchange student from Germany. We've kept\nin touch since, and she stopped by Kyoto last weekend on her way to give a\ntalk<\/span> at a plant<\/span>-biology conference in Okayama.<\/p>\n\n

The pleasant walk along\nthe Kamo river<\/a> that I posted<\/span> about yesterday was on my way meet Katrin\nfor the day's outing. We'd arranged<\/span> to meet in front of a clock<\/span> on the\nsouth side of Kyoto Station....<\/p>\n\n

It's a popular time to be in Kyoto, so the hotel at the station is\nridiculously priced (~US400\/night!), so I was<\/span> thrilled when Fumie found a\nmuch<\/span> more reasonable option, the Daiwa Roynet Hotel Kyoto -\nHachijoguchi<\/a>. It's new, clean, and not even a five<\/span> minutes stroll to\nthe south... in the photo above, taken from Kyoto Station, it's the\nbuilding to the right of center with large lettering running up and down.\nRecommended.<\/p>\n\n

You can visit Kyoto for 10 years and not see everything, so it's a\nchallenge<\/span> to pick what to offer someone in town for just a couple<\/span> of days,\nbut she had a guide<\/span> book and said she wanted to see the temple just north\nof the station, so off we headed. It's huge and<\/span> famous, but I'd never\nvisited.<\/p>\n\n

In an amazing coincidence, Katrin ran into a colleague<\/span> from another institution, who\nhappened to be in Japan, but not for the conference Katrin was attending. I think<\/span> they chatted\nabout enzyme transports or something.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, the Higashi Honganji Temple, though huge and venerable, lacks\nany sense of nature and feels quite sterile, so we (Paul Barr was with us)\ntook her to a more<\/span> visually appealing spot, the Kiyomizu Temple. It's crowded<\/span> and touristy, but for good reason, it's nice.<\/p>\n\n

But instead of going there directly, I thought<\/span> we walk through the\nhuge<\/i> cemetery on one side of the hill leading up to it, a cemetery<\/span>\nthat I've seen many times from a nearby<\/span> overpass, but had never been\nto.<\/p>\n\n

We arrived at the entrance I've driven past so many times...<\/p>\n\n

A the time the color of this stone really struck me as being interesting, but it seems much less so now, even though I've\ngot the color as accurate as reasonably possible...<\/p>\n\n

The graveyard leads up the hill toward the Kiyomizu Temple, so I always<\/span> thought that it was the graveyard associated with that temple,\nbut it seems that they're unrelated. It's actually<\/span> the graveyard for the Higashi Honganji Temple that we'd been to earlier, two kilometers away.<\/p>\n\n

The graveyard was as deserted as, well, a graveyard,<\/span> but things changed\nconsiderably once we got near the World Heritage Kiyomizu Temple, but I'll\nsave that for another post.<\/p>\n\n
