I stopped by the Imperial Household Agency office today at the Kyoto\nImperial Palace Park (\u4eac\u90fd\u5fa1\u6240)<\/span> to make a reservation<\/span> to visit the Katsura\nPalace next month, and brought along my camera in case anything was\nblooming.<\/p>\n\n

There are a lot of cherry trees in the park, but I think<\/span> they're just\nbudding so far. The blossoms<\/span> are peach or, perhaps in some case, plum like\nthose we sat the other day in “Plum Blossoms in\nFull Bloom at Kyoto\u2019s Kitano Tenmangu Shrine<\/a>”.<\/p>\n\n\n

I knew it was going to rain and so was better prepared than my last outing<\/a> which\nended in me getting absolutely soaked during a 20<\/span>-minute ride home on my\nscooter without rain gear. This time my preparation was simply knowing it\nwas coming and leaving the moment it started. (At least that was the\nplan.)<\/p>\n\n

So knowing I didn't have much time, I just pushed<\/span> my scooter in the park sort of aimlessly, stopping now and again for pictures.<\/p>\n\n

The varieties never cease to amaze me.<\/p>\n\n

I eventually came to a nice area that will be teeming with thick crowds in a couple<\/span> of weeks, but rain aside, it was absolutely delightful today.<\/p>\n\n

This orchard is where I got the most delightful shots in last year's “Clich\u00e9 Incarnate: Lame\nFormulaic Pictures of Plum Blossoms and Those Enjoying Them<\/a>”. The title<\/span> is a joke<\/span> about a conversation<\/span> I had<\/span> that led me there (explained on that\npage), though I had<\/span> apparently not noticed the “Peach Orchard” sign last\ntime.<\/p>\n\n

I had the place mostly to myself, but a few<\/span> folks wandered in and out...<\/p>\n\n\n

In one sense it's like shooting fish in a barrel,<\/span> but I put<\/span> a lot<\/span> of thought into blossom selection and composition... what's the background like, the lighting, the overall balance.\nThat last one above fails on some basic composition levels, but of the millions of blossoms around, it was the only one I noticed<\/span> with the subtle pink in the petals. It was at<\/span> a really<\/span> odd angle, with lots of branches in the way, so it was a challenge<\/span> to get even this shot, which is perhaps why I like<\/span> it more than it deserves.<\/p>\n\n

Not everything had a bright future... these blossoms, whatever they were, were well past their prime....<\/p>\n\n

I normally put the not-weather-sealed Voigtl\u00e4nder away at the first sign of rain, but every time I did<\/span> I felt<\/span> the need to pull it out for “just one last shot” almost right away.\nPushing along a path<\/span> toward the exit, I came across<\/span> yet another kind of blossom that was, at the risk of overusing the word today, just delightful....<\/p>\n\n
