Anthony is a strong swimmer.<\/p>\n\n

According to my blog, he could play in the water by\nhimself<\/a> four years ago (and also here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n

Still, as seen in “Little Fish<\/a>”, as recent as\ntwo years ago that level of skill was only enough to get him to “level 8”<\/span>\nat the swimming school where he's taken lessons for years; new\nstudents who have never been in the water start at “13”, going up to expert\nswimmers at “1”.<\/p>\n\n

He's really progressed quickly of late; now he's a the<\/span> “special” level\nbeyond “1”. This rapid advance is likely because for the last year, he's\nbeen in a water<\/span>-polo club at a different<\/span> school.<\/p>\n\n

It was an exciting joy to see him at his first real water-polo match\nlast month; we were so proud of him. In real water<\/span> polo, you're not allowed\nto stand on the bottom of the pool, so you're treading water the whole\ntime, but the pool at his school is too shallow for that kind of real\npractice, so I'm sure the first real match was a shock<\/span> in many ways,\nincluding needing to tread water for so long while exerting yourself\nathletically. (I didn't<\/span> know much about water polo prior to all this, but\nit's an exceedingly aggressive contact sport, closer to my image of rugby\nthan soccer.)<\/p>\n\n

The mild challenge on my part was getting good photos through the steamy\nglass that separated the viewing area from the pool, but the shot above, of\nan exhausted Anthony walking past after the match, just hits me right\nin the heart. My little<\/span> boy is growing up. This photo seems to be the\nnext step from “Tipping\nPoint<\/a>” three years ago.<\/p>\n\n

And of course, it calls to mind “Hunk<\/a>” from when he was three.<\/p>\n\n
