Picking up from “First Visit to Kyoto\u2019s Housen-in Temple<\/a>” the other day,\nwhere I ended<\/span> with having tea and sweets in the garden-viewing room, here are some more shots of that room and the area.<\/p>\n\n

The back of the room had some nice paintings in the alcoves...<\/p>\n\n

In the shot above, Paul is facing the window seen in the opening shot, shooting the detail of the translucent opening above it. It's covered<\/span> with thick Japanese paper, so he probably got a shot<\/span> like this:<\/p>\n\n\n

The full window looked like it should be very photogenic, but despite spending considerable effort on it, I didn't<\/span> come away with much.\nHere are two more attempts:<\/p>\n\n\n

Some of the ceiling boards in the temple are recycled floor boards of\nthe Fushimi\nCastle<\/a>, move here when it was dismantled in the 1600s. The stains<\/span> are\nthe blood of Motodada\nTorii<\/a> and his men, who committed seppuku<\/i><\/a> as part of a\nbattle<\/span> that changed the course of Japanese history.<\/p>\n\n

According to the guy giving the explanation above, the winners of the\nbattle would have just left the bodies there to rot, as a form<\/span> of\ndisrespect to their beaten foes, so the stains would have had plenty of\ntime to set into the wood grain. (The winners this time would all be dead a\nmonth<\/span> later, their heads piled into numerous huge kubizuka<\/i> mounds 20,000 at a\ntime,<\/span> at the decisive battle of\nSekigahara<\/a> that unified Japan, because the 10 days that they squandered\nin defeating Torii here allowed Torii's feudal lord the time to raise a\nsufficient<\/span> army to beat them a month<\/span> later. That feudal lord<\/a>'s\nfamily went on to rule Japan for more than 250 years until Westernization\nset in the 1860s. Had Torii<\/span> not made the stand here, the violent warring states\nperiod<\/a> would have likely not ended any time soon.)<\/p>\n\n

I recall that in person you could see specific things like hand prints, but I don't<\/span> see them in this photo.<\/p>\n\n
