Dipping back into my largely-untapped archive from November's many\nfall-foliage outings, here are some photos from a trip<\/span> to the Kyoto\nmountain-suburb of Ohara, where we (Damien Douxchamps, Paul Barr, and I)\nvisited some of the smaller temples surrounding the justly-famous Sanzen-in\ntemple (\u4e09\u5343\u9662),<\/span> which has been on my blog many times since my first visit<\/a> four years\nago, including the bazillion offering\nstatues<\/a> and one of my all-time favorite photos, “Serenity<\/a>”.<\/p>\n\n

But on this trip a few months ago, we avoided the oppressive crowds at\nSanzen-in, instead letting Damien introduce us to the hidden-gem lesser\ntemples dotting its perimeter.<\/p>\n\n

Where to go, of course, was into the temple where you could view the garden from its intended perspective.<\/p>\n\n

Near the entrance, a small stream in the narrow space between the\nbuilding and a rock<\/span> wall made for a nice<\/span> scene, and I tried<\/span> to get the kusaridoi<\/i><\/a>\ngutter chain in silhouette, but I'm not quite sure it works...<\/p>\n\n

I also noticed these branches oddly tied together (along with what looks to be a half<\/span>-dead vine)...<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, inside the temple it was crowded, but nothing like what it would be at Sanzen-in, and with some patience I was<\/span> able to get\na clean<\/span> shot of a tea<\/span>(?) room...<\/p>\n\n

The tatami (rice mats) in the foreground at the bottom of the frame are the hallway; to get this shot I was<\/span> standing almost outside in the external hallway\n(and would have been if it had not started raining).<\/p>\n\n

I didn't actually get a nice shot of the “dining” area with pot hanging from the ceiling, but\nto give a sense<\/span> of the Japanese aesthetics, here's a crop<\/span> from a wide,<\/span> out-of-focus shot...<\/p>\n\n

Bamboo is<\/i> grass, of course, so “bamboo grass” is like saying, er... “elm tree”.<\/p>\n\n

Entrance to the temple includes green tea and a sweet,<\/span> and as I'd been\ndoing<\/a>\nlately<\/a>, I tried<\/span> to get a simple<\/span> shot...<\/p>\n\n

I really wanted to create layers (the tatami, the wood threshold, the wet rocks, and the green of the garden), but just couldn't get the right angle...<\/p>\n\n

Then I thought to pull back from the edge to the red carpet, which is where I was<\/span> supposed to be anyway.\nThere are many pictures out there by other folks of me contorting to get the shot; it was probably like\nthe peach-pie scene<\/a>\nin “Look at this Instagram<\/a>” parody.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, the red is pretty but I wasn't<\/span> able to do much with it...<\/p>\n\n
