(Some\nplaces did have blackouts because local transformers couldn't handle the\nload.)\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nWhen bought my new <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-07-04\/209\">MacBook<\/a>, <span class='nobr'>I opted<\/span> for the\n80 gig drive, rather than the standard 60 gig, to give myself plenty of\nspace. Thus, it is with great shock that <span class='nobr'>I find<\/span> it's already getting full.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nPart of it could be the 20GB of <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-06-25\/206\">videos for Anthony<\/a>, the\n21GB of images from <a href=\"\/blog\/2006-07-15\/211\">my\nbrother's wedding<\/a> last week, or the 12GB of unprocessed photos that\npiled up over the last few months while <span class='nobr'>I concentrated<\/span> on finishing <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-07-21\/218\">my book<\/a>. <span class='nobr'>I had to<\/span> delete\nsome of the videos to make room for all the wedding pictures.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nSo, after less than three weeks, I've decided to upgrade my disk to <span class='nobr'>a 160GB<\/span>\ndrive. My Apple-employee friend Jason suggested just getting an external\ndrive case and <span class='nobr'>a new<\/span> drive, copying my data over, then swapping the drives.\nThat way, <span class='nobr'>I'd be able<\/span> to use my old 80GB drive externally, as <span class='nobr'>a backup<\/span> or\nfor rarely-needed data.\n\n<\/p><div style='padding-top:0; padding-bottom:0' class='img_right'><a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.transintl.com\/store\/category.cfm?Category=2643\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/minixpress.jpg\" width=\"160\" height=\"217\"\nborder=\"0\"\nid=\"iminixpress\"\/><\/a><\/div><p>\n\nPutzing around on the web, I found <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.creativemac.com\/articles\/viewarticle.jsp?id=48039\">an\narticle<\/a> about <span class='nobr'>a new<\/span> 2.5&#8221; SATA external drive box, Trans International's\n<a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.transintl.com\/store\/category.cfm?Category=2643\">minixpress\n825<\/a>. It's tiny, doesn't require external power when connected via\nFirewire, and can handle USB as well.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nIt's $100 without a drive, but since <span class='nobr'>I need<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a drive<\/span> too, <span class='nobr'>I thought<\/span> I'd pay\nthe extra $228 to have it come with <span class='nobr'>a 160GB<\/span> drive (<span class='nobr'>a Hitachi<\/span> TravelStar).\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nKnowing that they were planning the first shipment just last week, <span class='nobr'>I called<\/span> Trans International to check availability. <span class='nobr'>It turns<\/span> out that they're\nexpecting more on Friday or Monday, so that's fine. <span class='nobr'>I did get<\/span> some great\nadvice from the guy at Trans International: don't buy the unit with <span class='nobr'>a disk<\/span>\ninstalled, but rather buy them separately: that way, you get the full disk\nwarranty, separate from the unit's shorter warranty.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nThe cost differential was $1, so it was certainly worth it, and <span class='nobr'>I placed<\/span> my\norder accordingly.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nThanks Trans International!\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> Today it's much cooler, only 79F (26C) in the shade at the moment.
