We ended up getting out of Kyoto a half<\/span> an hour late, and lost another\nhour due to traffic jams on the highway, of unknown origin. We would<\/span> have\nbeen much later still if our timing would have been a bit<\/span> less lucky --\nafter finally getting out of the hour-long holdup, we came across a 10<\/span>-car\naccident, apparently about half a minute<\/span> or a minute<\/span> after it had happened. Two cars in<\/span> front seemed to have had a minor<\/span> rear-ender, and then behind\nthem were eight cars were accordion'd together. I guess<\/span> they were following\ntoo close (as most do in Japan, as elsewhere) and couldn't stop in time.\nLucky for them, there were two highway services patrol cars just in front\nof us, so they were on the scene very quickly.<\/p>\n\n

The flight turned out to not be so bad. Anthony slept much of its 12\nhours, albeit fitfully (waking up and crying momentarily several times an\nhour), but the super-fantastic part of it was that I got<\/span> a whole<\/span> row of\nfive seats to myself -- I could<\/span> push back the armrests and actually lie\ndown flat. It was fantastic<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n

In Chicago, I had to<\/span> go through immigration, pick up luggage and go\nthrough customs, re-check luggage, then get myself over to the departure\ngate for my next flight, which involved lugging all my non-check-in stuff\n(stroller, car seat, two small suitcases filled with baby stuff, and two\n“drink pack” carrying cases, and one two-year-old boy) up to an\nairport tram, ride three stops, down to one concourse, through security,\ndown and through Chicago's “funky tunnel” (if you've been\nthere, you know what I'm talking about) which goes underneath some\ntaxiways, then up to the concourse and to my gate<\/p>\n\n

This gate-to-gate movement was one of the things I was<\/span> dreading, since\nI'd have so much stuff, but I found<\/span> a wonderful<\/span> way to deal with it: put\nthe car seat in the stroller, then one of my bags in the car seat, and then\nlet Anthony sit on the bag. It made moving<\/span> around a breeze.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Although I could get from gate to gate within the alloted two hours,\nUnited apparently couldn't do the same for my checked-in luggage, as it\nwasn't there when I arrived<\/span> in Cleveland. Mom was, though, so we headed off\nto Rootstown. Anthony fell asleep along the way, and we arrived at about\n10:30pm, almost exactly 22 hours to the minute after our 1:30pm departure\nfrom Kyoto.
