This is an (almost) impossible shot to get... the garden and<\/i> the\ngarden-viewing room at the Enkouji Temple (\u5713\u5149\u5bfa,<\/span> Kyoto Japan), at the\nheight of fall colors, both completely devoid of people<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n

A clear shot from near the edge of the room with a 50mm<\/span> lens is one\nthing, but what about with a wide<\/span>-angle lens (24mm)<\/span> from the back of the room... from\nbeyond<\/i> the back of the room (leaning back into a little<\/span> alcove you can't actually enter)...<\/p>\n\n

The guy just outside the room with his arm outstretched is telling folks\nto move out of the way once you get your shot, because others want to take\npictures too. Yet, he walked back and forth in everyone's shot, and talked\nincessantly, repeating himself over and over as waves of tourists came in\nand out. It drove<\/span> me mad, but for all I know<\/span> it's his temple, so I've no\nright to complain.<\/p>\n\n

Sometimes he did move further away when chatting with people outside...<\/p>\n\n

But I was patient, and waited (and left and came back and waited more),\nand finally for a brief<\/span> moment it was truly a clean<\/span> shot: I took<\/span> exactly\none frame (the one that leads this post) and knew I\nhad<\/span> it.<\/p>\n\n

(Update: easy come easy go; after I\nposted<\/span> this article, my brother pointed out that there actually\nis<\/i> someone in the background of the shot. I\nsimply<\/span> hadn't noticed. Sigh. I could<\/span>\neasily clone the person out, but that wouldn't be fair after making a big<\/span> deal about the lack of people. Oh well, I guess<\/span> there's a reason<\/span>\nI said<\/span> “impossible”. There's always\nnext year.)<\/p>\n\n

I've lately tried similar shots at other temples under less-challenging conditions, including one in\n“Tea and Sweets Among the Fall Colors at Kyoto\u2019s Daihyouin Temple<\/a>”,\none elsewhere in the aforementioned “photogenic November” post<\/a>,\nand one in “Some Desktop Backgrounds from Kyoto\u2019s Koumyou-in Temple<\/a>”.\n<\/p>\n\n
