Revisiting last fall's ikebana<\/i> (flower arranging) event at the Shoren'in Temple, previously seen in these posts:<\/p>\n\n

I ended up chatting with the American guy taking the photo above. It turns<\/span> out that he had just met the lady in the kimono and done a quick<\/span>\npicture, and when she happened by as we talked, he introduced us. She accepted<\/span> my request to take a quick<\/span> portrait; not wanting to keep her\nwaiting, I suggested<\/span> that I'd do it right then and there standing\n(coincidentally) about where I took<\/span> the shot above from, in a walkway<\/span>\nbetween two buildings.<\/p>\n\n

She protested that the background was not conducive to a good<\/span> shot, at\nwhich point I gave<\/span> her a “trust me” look, directed her to a pose,<\/span> and fired\none frame:<\/p>\n\n

I had actually fired off a couple of shots before I finished<\/span> directing\nher for the shot I wanted,<\/span> just to get her used to it, but the whole “photo\nshoot” from start to end lasted perhaps 20 seconds, half of which was me\nfinding the best angle in the immediate vicinity for the background.<\/p>\n\n

The portrait wasn't planned, but I'll file this under “Portraiture\nPractice<\/a>” because this was just about the time I was<\/span> starting to get interested in portraiture.\nThis was about a week<\/span> after I'd posted\n“Portraiture Post-Processing in Lightroom: How Many Faces Can One Portrait Have?<\/a>”\nand\n“More Portraiture Post Processing: St\u00e9phane Barbery\u2019s Interpretations of That One Shot of Me<\/a>”.<\/p>\n\n\n

This time the “trust me” confidence was real, unlike the\nfake confidence I tried<\/span> to exude in my previous post<\/a>. Maybe\nit's because it was unplanned and because I didn't<\/span> know her... the worst I\nwould<\/span> have to do if she followed up for a copy<\/span> of the photo was say that it\ndidn't come out.<\/p>\n\n

Most people don't follow up when I tell<\/span> them I have<\/span> shots of them that\nthey might like, to the point that I'm genuinely surprised when someone\ndoes. The photographer<\/span> two shots up didn't. This dad<\/a> didn't.\nMaybe one for every twenty that I offer.<\/span> I don't<\/span> know why I bother<\/span> anymore.<\/p>\n\n

But I do because I love to share; I'm most happy that the guy in this series<\/a>\ndid follow up, and he loved the shots I sent. Aoi, above, did as well, and\nshe said she liked the shot. How could<\/span> you not...\nshe looks great.<\/p>\n\n

I'd camped out for a while at the end of this picturesque hallway for a\nwhile,<\/span> in hopes of getting a nice<\/span> shot (perhaps along the lines of the lead\nshot in “A\nFirst<\/span> Visit To Kyoto\u2019s Koutou-in Temple<\/a>” two years prior).<\/p>\n\n

I didn't quite get what I wanted, perhaps because it was quite busy and there was always lots of two-way traffic, but I like<\/span> these shots nevertheless.<\/p>\n\n
