In “Kyoto's Souren-ji Temple at\nf\/1.2<\/a>” the other day, I shared<\/span> some\nultra-thin-depth-of-field shots taken with a 50mm f\/1.2\nlens<\/span>. A thin depth<\/span> of field can be distracting<\/a>, or it can\nmake for a great<\/span> effect — one that I'm\nquite partial to — but I didn't<\/span> think the\nshots on that post were all that strong... just odd\/different (and\ncolorful).<\/p>\n\n

So, for today's post, I was thinking to share some better examples, but\nI ran<\/span> out of time to do the writeup I wanted,<\/span> so instead I'll just share a\ncouple<\/span> of cute shots that happen to have a pretty<\/span> thin depth of field,\ntaken a couple<\/span> of years ago with a Nikkor 300mm f\/2 lens<\/a>, at\nf\/2, an hour and a half<\/span> after I first<\/span> got it.<\/p>\n\n

The photo above, taken free-standing while hand-holding the 8kg (18lb) lens, was taken one second before the following shot....<\/p>\n\n\n

That's actually a crop from a larger original that appeared at the time\non “Street\nPhotography (Sort of) In Roppongi Hills<\/a>”.<\/p>\n\n

The girl is<\/span> slightly out of focus, but the\nbird's eye is dead on. It's completely<\/span> lucky, of course, as I wasn't<\/span> in shape<\/a> and had no\nexperience with the lens, but I'll take it. It's one\nof<\/span> my favorite photos.<\/p>\n\n

20 minutes later a similar scene looked to unfold...<\/p>\n\n
