In “Massive\nSupport Column at Nara's Todai-ji Temple<\/a>” I noted<\/span> that of the many\nmassive columns in the 320-year-old “Hall of the Great Buddha” (until recently the largest\nwooden building in the world), one particular column was quite special.<\/p>\n\n

It was very dark inside this cavernous building, with what light there\nwas mixed among scattered incandescent floodlights and ever-changing\nskylight wafting in from the occasional window. Adjusting color balance on\nthese shots has been a nightmare,<\/span> even with ample use of the color chart<\/a>, because the lighting\nchanges with each location, and over time as clouds passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think it's accurate to say that every person who paused for a photo<\/span>\nflashed a peace<\/span> sign. This is exceedingly common in Japan (much to the angst<\/a> of\nnon-Japanese), but here the saturation rate was a full<\/span> 100%.<\/p>\n\n

The unknown girl who opens this post played her part by flashing a peace<\/span> sign for me,\nbut I much<\/span> prefer her natural reaction to the situation, seen 1.5 seconds earlier...<\/p>\n\n

Of course, I had to give it a try.<\/p>\n\n

I'm 192cm (6'4\") tall, but I've gotten into pretty good shape in the\nlast year (continuing to lose fat beyond how I was<\/span> here<\/a>), so I thought<\/span>\nthere might be a chance<\/span> I could<\/span> do it. But even if<\/span> I couldn't,<\/span> the attempt\nwould make for funny pictures. Aeron<\/a> had never used my\nmodel of camera, but I imposed<\/span> on him to take pictures for me...<\/p>\n\n\n

One thing I haven't mentioned yet is just why people are climbing\nthrough a hole<\/span> in a\ncolumn<\/span> in a temple<\/span> housing a huge<\/span> (15 meter tall) Buddha statue.<\/p>\n\n

Well, I don't know why<\/i> people climb through beyond the obvious\n“because it's there”, nor, for that matter, why the hole was\nmade in the first place, but the salient point is that the hole is the size\nof one nostril of the Great Buddha statue that the building houses.<\/p>\n\n
