I made a trip to the Todaiji Temple<\/a> (\u6771\u5927\u5bfa)<\/span> in Nara last month.\nNara was the capital of Japan 1,<\/span>300 years ago.<\/p>\n\n

The main temple building is a massive wooden structure built toward the\nend of the 1600s (though much smaller and less ambitious than the original\nbuilding long destroyed by fire). Until recently, it was the largest wooden structure in the world.<\/p>\n\n

Interesting to me was that the main columns were not individual tree\ntrunks, but somehow crafted from component parts. The wooden<\/span> boards comprising the exterior of each column can be seen in the photo above, but I\nhave<\/span> no idea what's inside... I'd love to<\/span> know the full construction\ntechnique designed back then (1688) that gives the ~20m (65 foot)<\/span> tall\ncolumns their rigidity. The building<\/span> has survived (presumably many) strong earthquakes.<\/p>\n\n

(On a tangential note, the technology these days for earthquake protection is amazing... check\nout this house ground\nisolation system<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n

I don't recall how many of these massive columns the building has (there\nmust be dozens; you can see five of them in the background of the photo\nabove), but this one particular column is special in a funny<\/span> way. That's\nthe subject of a separate<\/span> post, here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n
