I've been doing a lot of portraiture practice lately, so I finally<\/span> made\na portraiture-practice\ncategory<\/a> on my blog. This post is likely the last for a while,<\/span> a few<\/span> shots from last week with Paul Barr and St\u00e9phane\nBarbery.<\/p>\n\n

The photos on this post of me, such as the one above, were taken by Paul\nBarr, and post processed by me (mostly with Paul looking over my\nshoulder).<\/p>\n\n

I think the one above has some interesting (yet perhaps disconcerting)\ncharacter, for a\ncouple<\/span> of reasons. First there's the distortion caused by the close\nproximity of the lens to the subject. Playing around in Lightroom, I was<\/span> able to easily adjust the distortion away using\nLightroom's manual lens-correction tools, but the result was less\ninteresting\/comical, so it's the original that I'm presenting here.<\/p>\n\n

Another thing is the lighting. We were trying our hand at some\nartificial lighting, a flash<\/span> unit to camera\nright. In this case<\/span>, iris close to the light really caught\/reflects the light, so it looks\nvery different from the other iris; the result lends a bit<\/span> of disconcernment\nwithout the viewer necessarily noticing why (though now that I've mentioned\nit, you'll not be able to not see it. \ud83d\ude42 )<\/p>\n\n

In the end we just didn't feel comfortable with the flash, so moved to\nan area with a rice-paper-covered<\/span> window, which\nprovided rich, smooth light...<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wanted to include at least one color shot, but it seems downright\nbland compared to the grittier B&W treatment that seems to suit these\nshots.<\/p>\n\n
