As I mentioned in this\nmorning's post<\/a>, I went on<\/span> a drive<\/span> to the northern mountains of Kyoto\nyesterday. Our first<\/span> stop was the middle-of-nowhere Sourenji Temple (\u5b97\u84ee\u5bfa).<\/span><\/p>\n\n

It was cold and the light was lush. On the way<\/span> from where we parked I\nsnapped<\/span> this picture, which unfortunately has a local<\/span> farmer going by in\nhis little truck and Paul Barr caught mid step, but the richness is almost\nunreal...<\/p>\n\n\n

There were a bunch of very oddly pruned trees whose bottom half looked like large bonsai trees, with\ntall super-thin shoots doubling the height from there...<\/p>\n\n

The style does not appeal to me at all (they make me think of\ngrotesquely large Chia\npets<\/a>). I've seen a similar<\/span> style at Shouzan<\/a>, but those were\nthe size of large bushes... these were full-on trees reaching multiple\nstories tall.<\/p>\n\n

I'll share shots from the relatively-small temple area in another post,\nbut for now I'll end with this pleasant little alcove on the opposite side\nfrom where the stairs above end...<\/p>\n\n

Walking to the fence at the end and turning around to face the camera, I took the<\/span> photo that leads this post.<\/p>\n\n

Normally I end up doing something<\/i> to every photo I take<\/span> in post\nprocessing (in Lightroom).... nudging exposure, contrast, noise reduction,\nwhite balance, etc., because I'm simply not careful and patient (and\nskilled) enough to get it right in camera. I could<\/span> never be a film<\/span> photographer.<\/p>\n\n

The image quality can generally afford this post-processing step because\nI shoot<\/span> in raw format; it both affords great latitude<\/a> in\npost processing, and can save me from disasters<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

To some extent I've embraced this lazy unskilled approach to save me time with white balance. I just leave<\/span> the camera at “Auto” and don't care about it while shooting, then set the white balance\nlater in bulk via a reference<\/span> shot of a WhiBal<\/span> card (like this<\/a>\nand this<\/a>) or from a\ncolor chart<\/a> (like this<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n

You can never really say “straight out of the camera” with a raw<\/span>-format\nimage because the result you get necessarily depends on the raw converter\nand its particular quirks, but other than setting the white balance via a\nneutral<\/span> square on a color<\/span>-cart shot, the lead photo is just as it appeared\nwhen first loaded into Lightroom. Just amazing.<\/p>\n\n
