I mentioned in my previous post<\/a> that I'm\nnot generally a fan<\/span> of the wide-angle lens, so I find<\/span> the photo above\nsomewhat annoying, but also somewhat attractive. I can<\/span>'t decide.\n<\/p>\n\n

The next two items likely fall into the same category for many folks....\ntwo-frame animated GIFs that give a “3D viewer” feeling, like those old\nimage-pair glasses we had as kids...<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I've long noticed that when flipping among images in Lightroom,\nsometimes I get<\/span> a momentary<\/span> 3D stereo feeling when adjacent images are\nalmost identical except for a slight<\/span> horizontal displacement (like our two\neyes' horizontal displacement), and while at the shrine yesterday, decided\nto finally take some shots with this processing in mind.<\/p>\n\n

So, I swayed<\/span> gently from side to side while keeping one point in the\ncenter of the frame, and once I had<\/span> a nice<\/span> smooth pattern, snapped a shot<\/span>\non either end of the sway. Then at home I loaded<\/span> the two images into\nPhotoshop, did some web searches on “how to make an animated GIF in\nPhotoshop”, and minutes later was done.<\/p>\n\n

I learn now that Wikipedia refers to this technique as “wiggle\nstereoscopy<\/a>”, which seems a perfectly<\/span> appropriate name.<\/p>\n\n

I don't like that the animation can't be easily control by the reader on an image-by-image basis\n(for example, I don<\/span>'t like that the animation is on by default... it's jarring to the reader not expecting it,\nso I'd prefer to have it start only when requested), so if I ever<\/span> do this again, I'll likely dispense\nwith the animated GIFs and build a JavaScript<\/span>\/Sprite approach (which means that I'll probably build\na Lightroom<\/span> plugin to make them). We'll see.<\/p>\n\n
